Spirit Airlines is adding three new routes from its base in Atlantic City, including the airport’s first-ever international route.
Spirit Airlines Will Serve Cancun From Atlantic City, The First International Route From ACY
Spirt Airlines is currently the only commercial airline serving Atlantic City, New Jersey (ACY). Seven destinations are currently available, including:
- Atlanta (ATL) – 4x per week
- Fort Lauderdale (FLL) – up to 3x per day
- Fort Myers (RSW) – daily
- Myrtle Beach (MYR) – up to 2x per day
- Orlando (MCO) – 3x per day
- Tampa (TPA) – daily
- West Plan Beach (PBI) – 4x per week
When Spirit announced plans to serve Miami, it details plans to start service to Miami (MIA). Daily service will start on October 6, 2021.
Today, Spirit Airlines announced it would also add service from Atlantic City to Cancun, Mexico and San Juan, Puerto Rico:
- Miami – daily (starts October 6, 2021)
- Cancun – 4x per week (starts October 29, 2021)
- San Juan – 3x per week (starts October 31, 2021)
The new Cancun route makes the first international service from ACY.
Spirit Airlines is in the midst of installing Wi-Fi throughout its fleet and it will be fast enough to stream from services like Netflix or Hulu. This service is already available on select aircraft and is expected to be available systemwide by early 2022. Do remember to bring a back-up charger, though, as Spirit Airlines will not offer power ports.
With Wi-Fi available, leisure travel booming, and the ultra-low-coast business model finally more clearly disclosed, Spirit Airlines is poised to do well in markets that have struggled to traditionally support commercial air service.
CONCLUSION
Spirit Airlines is fast becoming the least-depressing thing about Atlantic City (with apologies to any readers who call Atlantic City home). While casinos are being blown up, Spirit is bolstering service. Still a beautiful part of the county, hopefully the new service will not only provide options for South Jersey residents, but bring in more tourists looking for an alternate to Las Vegas or a mix of water and gaming.

Is Spirit planning on attracting passengers that might otherwise use PHL or the NYC area airports? While I could imagine there being some demand to ACY among budget minded American travelers, I’d have to imagine that the CUN flight has virtually no traffic originating ex-Mexico.
PHL is honestly such a terrible airport that I could see a lot of travelers using this as an alternative, especially those in South Jersey.
ACY is one of my favorite airports, it’s peaceful and has no long lines. Too bad every time I fly there it has to be on Spirit…
So many flights! People are more anxious to leave Atlantic City than I thought.
Actually if you drive through the long term lot at ACY, at least half of the cars are from out-of-state, usually PA, so it isn’t just people leaving Atlantic City.
Need to serve soda., water, coffee, tea without charging. Pleaseeeeee
really surprised they’re trying to run winter ACY service in such a summer oriented market (as someone who lives relatively close to that area)
