A 16‑year‑old’s crude joke about “a bomb in his pocket” aboard a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale sparked a major security alert, leading to his arrest and a costly flight disruption.
Teen’s “Bomb in My Pocket” Joke On Spirit Flight Leads To Arrest
On July 14, just before takeoff from Fort Lauderdale‑Hollywood International Airport (FLL) for Kansas City (MCI), a 16‑year‑old boy on Spirit Airlines Flight 1332 allegedly joked, “I have a bomb in my pocket.” The remark, though apparently meant as crude humor referencing masculinity, triggered a full security response. A woman seated nearby overheard, became alarmed, and alerted a flight attendant. The aircraft was diverted to a remote area, passengers were deplaned, and law enforcement thoroughly inspected the plane, finding no explosives.
Authorities charged the teen with criminal mischief and making a false bomb threat. In juvenile court, his mother emphasized that it was a “dumb joke” not intended as a real threat. “He’s a good kid,” she said. His father echoed the plea, stating the boy acted “immature[ly], not like a criminal.” Video below suggests his friends may have been removed in handcuffs as well.
Spirit Airlines confirmed the incident, reporting the aircraft was safely inspected and cleared. However, the event caused a five‑hour delay and cost the airline an estimated $50,000. The judge ordered a psychological evaluation and released the teen, though final punishment has not been set.
The incident isn’t isolated: earlier this summer, a Michigan man allegedly called in a bogus Spirit Airlines bomb threat at Detroit Airport after missing his flight—but bombs on planes are nothing to joke about, even 25 years after the 9/1/2001 attacks.

CONCLUSION
A tossed‑off joke about a bomb, even when it is really just a crude joke about manhood, can carry serious repercussions on board aircraft. For this teenager, what he likely saw as a clever punchline ended with criminal charges, court orders, and costly flight disruptions. His parents’ plea for leniency may help his legal outcome, but the case underlines just how high the stakes are when humor collides with someone’s sense of security. You don’t joke about bombs…

If he isn’t lying about the size of his “manhood”, I’ll bet he will be offers from someone here for a free vacation on his 18th birthday.
Meanwhile if it did cost Spirit $50k they need to go after the family for reimbursement, even if it takes years.
The kid should have read one of your older blog posts of the seven or so words to never say on a plane.
Is it possible to fix the rss feed for the site? The last couple days it is not loading the article in the rss feeder completely.
I’ve asked Boarding Area about this – I don’t have any control over that element.
Thank you. I appreciate it. I enjoy reading your blog, but wondered why I was not receiving the posts any longer.
I subscribe to the RSS via NewsBlur. That seems to be working fine.
Usually I am tough on responsibility but at 16 that kid hasn’t sufficient life experience to understand how expensive a slip of the tongue can be. If it was said as an intentional threat he should do time. Inappropriate slang spoken to a friend should be punished by costs incurred.
I dunno, I think even at that age, post 9/11, you would know even joking about stuff like that on a plane will not end well. Remember, speaking Algebra on an airplane isn’t recommended…
Lol. 16 is an age where they are not always thinking with the correct brain.
This is how ridiculous Americans and much of the world has become.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
We live in society of plasticized wi-fried pansies. I welcome nuclear WW3 to end the stupidity. Just one of a long list. it’s the logical outcome.
Now carry on with your self-identifying as whatever you want. Keep up with the pronouns. Go ask ChatGPT how
widespread that is in in the Northern Hemisphere.
oh yeah…ask for the timeline…2012….hmmm…
Young man needs to admit he understood what he did and apologies, to his parents only. Never the Court. He messed up and maybe very down. He needs compassion. Or.. take his phone away for one week. Explain how frustration feels to you, and how you affect others at times and your only 16.
That snot nosed kid needs to drop his drawers, bend over the desk, and get 10-20 swats with a belt
He obviously has never been disciplined given his parents statements in court
Silly boy. I’ll wager he won’t be doing that again any time soon.
Here’s my question. Jerky teenage boy makes bomb in pants joke. You’re the only one to hear/notice. Do you say anything? Me, no.
Ridiculous; everything is about the Law enforcement industrial complex in America.
He looked quite pleased with himself being led off in handcuffs. Then mommy and daddy defended him. In two years he won’t be so smug when he’s legally responsible for his smart mouth, but mommy and daddy will still be defending him. Spoiled parents breed spoiled children.
