I’m flying Spirit Airlines tonight on a transcontinental flight. Let me explain why.
The point is not to provide a detailed review of Sprit Airlines, Ben did that nicely. I don’t care to taste the canned cocktails or overpay for the sugary or salty onboard snacks.
I just want to sleep…and not pay an arm and a leg to do it.
I’m going to Florida and cannot leave until tonight but have a meeting scheduled tomorrow morning.
I could have flown United through Houston or Chicago and perhaps even scored an upgrade, but really wanted to fly direct tonight.
That left two choices: JetBlue or Spirit.
Oh I know, JetBlue has everything going for it. MINT Suites, fast wi-fi, and great food. It definitely was my preferred choice in terms of onboard product.
But it was $999. I’m paying $78 for my ticket plus $75 for an upgrade to a “Big Front Seat” up front, akin to a traditional domestic first class seat. Throw in $25 for a carry-on bag and I still come out far ahead of flying JetBlue. I can survive five hours overnight without wi-fi and gourmet food.

I’ll report back tomorrow how it went.
Or you could have flown nonstop from LGB to FLL for just $99 tonight on Jetblue.
But I want a big front seat. 😉
I would have done the same thing in your case. Flew a red-eye with Spirit in the back LAS-FLL. It sucked, but it was definitely worth the $13 I paid for it. If you’re flying it in a BFS then its definitely a better option than B6.
AA has direct lax-Mia.
We are flying spirit home Sunday night on a red eye from Las to PHL for same reasons. Cheap, direct, and overnight. Makes for a fun quick weekend to see Zion.
Hmmm….. your choice of spirit over jetblue has answered why us airlines keep making profits despite their poor customer service….
Spirits big front seats are the best deal in travel, there’s a reason why they now highlight it on their website.
How was it?
