One footnote to my SWISS First Class Lounge review from Zurich. The Hästens bed was truly the best bed I’ve ever slept in.
There are many reasons to visit the SWISS First Class Lounge in E Gates area in Zurich. One is certainly for the private bedrooms offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Not only are these “hotel rooms” a great place to freshen up and relax before your flight, but they feature incredible beds from Swedish company Hästens.
I took a two-hour nap in the St. Moritz room and found the bed a perfect combination of light, warm, and soft. Combine an amazing double mattress with a soft mattress pad, a plush comforter, and oversized pillows and you have an unparalleled sleep-inducing experience.
Truly, I can sleep almost anywhere—I don’t require nice sheets or a luxury mattress. But considering we spend 1/3 of our life in bed, it just seems silly not to invest in incredible bedding.
But how much is too much? A Hästens bed package can set you back $60,000! Mattresses are made by hand and stuffed with horse hair. No wonder it was so comfortable.
Turst me, I would not write about this if it did not blow me away. For those who have visited the SWISS First Class Lounge in Zurich, do you concur? Best bed and bedding ever…
So are you still suing Swiss Air? You just can’t stop talking about how great their first class product is. This actually justifies why they don’t release first class award tickets. Because it’s too good and you are gonna pay cash for it anyways!!
I don’t know how Matthew makes money off the blog since he’s not selling credit cards (part of the reason I enjoy this blog over others), but I imagine it serves a marketing function for his travel-booking service. If he reviews the flights he pays cash for, he may be able deduct them as a business expense. That way, even if the law suit is unsuccessful, at least he doesn’t have to eat the whole cost of the ticket(s). It would be silly not to write timely and honest reviews on expensive tickets if it makes the expense deductible.
For my part, I enjoy a level of writing and thought well above the other blogs out there, and hope the suit goes well and establishes some precedents in favor of consumers!
Thanks for your kind comment, Dan. I appreciate your readership.
Absolutely agree.
On a side note: it’s funny, but all BA bloggers have slept in the same bed at one point or another, it seems 😉 I also choose St Moritz, if it’s available. The views are insane.
@cariverga That’s funny, but true! It’s like the Lufthansa FCT…I’ve run into BA bloggers there twice in the last year!
Interesting comment about the relationship between how much we invest on things and how long we really use them. I once tried to convince my wife that a Hastens matress was worth as we would spend 1/3 of our lives on it while we spend sometimes more than that for a car that we drive no more than 30 min/day. She did not buy into my theory. 🙁
Every time I try to talk myself into buying one of these beds, I stop and look through my travel pictures from around the world, note the tremendous need in our world, and then realize that I probably can use my money for better things.
Ok so maybe I missed something…in your previous post about the LX ground experience you stated that you arrived approximately 2 hours before departure with your family so you could enjoy a meal in the lounge. But here you say that you took a 2 hour nap. Did you nap alone? Did you miss your flight? Or are you just exaggerating?
Hi Bob, fair question but this nap occurred during my August visit (see link in first paragraph for full lounge review from last fall). There was no nap during the last trip.
…how in the world does a person remember his layover time in hours and then spend the time typing all of that? it hurt me to read that and more so to even type this. wow.
Wow Bob! Glad you are spending time fact checking the post. I bet you are the one at parties who talks about inaccuracies in the layout of cities as portrayed in movie car chase scenes. Impressive!
Where was the rest of your family during said 2 hour nap?
See comment above. Different trip.
Slightly off topic, but any suggestions for Heathrow T3 next week for a longish layover there?
We’re flying Virgin Atlantic in PE for the LHR departure/connecting flight, but, of course, there’s no assurance of gaining admittance to their Clubhouse if it’s busy since our miles are with Delta, not Virgin’s frequent flyer programs.
Is Lounge No.1 the only other “good option” for a chance to rest during our layover if Virgin’s clubhouse is unavailable?
Thanks!
At least a few years ago, the No1 Lounge was pretty solid, albeit nowhere at the clubhouse level.
Thanks, Jim!
Have a question bugging me… In your post on the ground experience you said you arrived just two hours before departure time and here you said you had a two hours nap in this room?
I am an occasional reader and appreciate your blog but i don’t understand the need to write something that doesn’t add up.
This was from a previous trip last year. I apologize for the confusion.
Matthew

Thanks.
Oh come on, you can get a perfectly good Hästens mattress for $40,000. They aren’t just for rich people.
@ Jordan, exactly.
I mean I could spend $40, 000 on home upgrade, or to a university degree, but I’d rather fork it out for a mattress that will need to be replaced in about eight years. University degrees and home upgrades last ages, but i’d rather live dangerously, i’m such a intelligent wealthy badass with no insecurities.
