Turkish Airlines Super Bowl Commercial with Dr. Oz

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 5, 2018February 4, 2018 7 Comments

I did not watch the Super Bowl yesterday, but I was monitoring for airline or hotel commercials. Once again, Turkish Airlines provided a memorable one.

Last year, Morgan Freeman did a superb job in emphasizing that Turkish Airlines serves more countries than any other airline. It was during a time in which recent terrorist attacks had scared many people away from visiting Turkey. Instead, the ad made a case to use Istanbul merely as a connecting point.

With Morgan Freeman too busy with Mountain Dew, Turkish Airlines tapped Dr. Oz this year for its video. The 90-second commercial is entitled 5 Senses with Dr. Oz.

Once again, Turkish Airlines stresses its international route map, though more indirectly this year.

“Go out and see the world. See, smell, hear, taste, and touch.”

That’s a message I can wholeheartedly endorse. By focusing on the beauty of this world, Turkish attempts to subliminally link traveling to the most beautiful and exotic places in the world to Turkish Airlines. I think the Turkish Airlines Dr Oz commercial does a good job. How about you?

Personally I didn’t find the ad very appealing (in fact it makes me less likely to fly Turkish Airlines), but that could be due to my strong dislike of Dr Oz and his promotion of non-scientific and pseudoscientific advice.

I did not like the ad at all, mostly because Dr. Oz has such a poor track record when it comes to presenting medically sound advice to a general audience. (I was waiting for the camera to pan to Gwyneth Paltrow in the next seat…). I assume he was chosen because he’s a very prominent Turkish-American and maybe because the “new age light” vibe of the ad is in sync with his message, but for me it was an off-putting choice.

I have lived in Turkey and love the people, food, scenery, and language, so I hope this ad doesn’t dissuade anyone from visiting Turkey. Iyi yolculuklar 🙂

I, too, was very disappointed that they hired this quack to do their commercial. I don’t understand why they would use him.

Agree with above comments that adding “Dr.” Oz, brings down the credibility of the entire thing. Did not like and was disappointed in the airline.

Have you noticed that virtually all TK ads carefully hide that they have the worst seating configuration in business class? With a 2x3x2, it’s a third rank airline … a premium economy for the price of business…
