Turkish Airlines is returning to Newark more than two decades after abandoning service to Liberty International Airport.
The carrier will launch daily service starting in August 2019, utilizing an Airbus A330-300:
- TK29 Istanbul (IST) – Newark (EWR) / 13:15-17:20 / A333
- TK30 Newark (EWR) – Istanbul (IST) / 22:30-15:15 / A333
I love the late departure out of Newark. It maximizes sleep and allows for domestic connections across the country. United may be focusing on local traffic at Newark, but will no doubt feed many passengers onto Turkish.
I’d call United and Turkish frenemies. They are not joint venture or even codeshare partners, but they are both Star Alliance members. I’m sure United would rather you fly United or Lufthansa to Germany then connect to Istanbul, but I see synergies in working with Turkish.
Not only does Turkish offer a decent economy class experience, it is also serves as a gateway to many unique cities in the world that other carriers do not serve.
Newark to Istanbul is such a special route for me…

CONCLUSION
I am excited to see another U.S. destination from Turkish Airlines. Not only does Turkish offer an exceptional business class product, it is also often an excellent source of award space.

At the very least, I would send them to therapy. I mean, I know, this was probably far, far, far more traumatic than what an actual soldier would experience.
But hey, he is still flying United, so how bad could it have been?

alliance synergy is actually a major draw. airlines only wanna pretend JV matters, but from a pax perspective, i really don’t care jack about whether or not they’re JV, or even code-shared.
just being in the same alliance with recognition of benefits is a huge incentive for me to pick a certain flight over others, all else being equal.
SAS having an exclusive NYC presence at EWR and AirChina PEK-IAH are similar stories. (the case for EVA TPE-IAH is less about synergy but more for the fact that Houston is one of the largest Taiwanese diaspora concentrations in the US, kinda like KE A380 to ATL before the JV was in place).

As a frequent flier of Turkish Airlines from JFK, it is easier to go through Istanbul Airport than it is in any US airport. 83.5 million passangers had connecting flights from Istanbul Airport back in 2016 and the growth rate per year is mind blowingly larg for this location.
When will Turkish airlines be able to confirm this Newark to Istanbul flight and start issuing tickets. I am just waiting to get away from United
