Bid for a 2018 Winter Olympics Package on United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onNovember 1, 2017November 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

The 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are just around the corner, now just 100 days away.

Next year’s games will be in PyeongChang, South Korea (not to be confused with Pyongyang in the North). United Airlines has been the official airline of Team USA for nearly 40 years and has put together an attractive Olympic travel package MileagePlus members can bid on.

The auction is here and will run through December 01, 2017.

The winner of the auction will receive:

  • Roundtrip United Business Class® airfare for two to Seoul, South Korea
  • Four-night hotel accommodations in the PyeongChang area (Ramada Gangwon Sokcho)
    • Check-in: Saturday, February 17, 2018
    • Check-out: Wednesday, February 21, 2018
  • Ground transportation throughout your stay, including to and from airport and hotel
  • Local hosts and/or hostesses to guide you throughout your stay
  • Two single entry passes to enjoy exquisite food, beverages and entertainment at CoSport’s Hospitality Center
  • Event tickets to some of the most sought-after Olympic events including:
    • Ski Jumping Men’s Large Hill Individual Final
    • Ice Hockey Men’s Prelim Round
    • Figure Skating Ice Dance: Short Dance
    • Bobsleigh Two-Man: Heat 3&4
    • Freestyle Skiing Women’s Halfpipe Final and Men’s Halfpipe Qualifying
  • Commemorative Gifts
  • Daily breakfast and meal vouchers

Bidding is currently at 75,000 miles…I expect that to go up as high as tenfold for this package.

Six Chosen Athletes

Meanwhile, United unveiled six sponsored athletes for the games, which I include mostly because I like the picture below:

a group of people posing for a picture in front of an airplane

  • Gus Kenworthy – freeskier from Telluride, Colorado and 2014 Olympic silver medalist in slopestyle
  • Jamie Anderson – snowboarder from South Lake Tahoe, California and 2014 Olympic gold medalist
  • R. Celski – short track speedskater from Federal Way, Washington and 2014 Olympic silver medalist and double bronze medalist at the Olympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010
  • Erin Hamlin – luger from Remsen, New York and 2014 Olympic bronze medalist
  • Nathan Chen – figure skater from Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Nikko Landeros – sled hockey player from Johnstown, Colorado and two-time Paralympic gold medalist (2010, 2014)

United is not the first to dress up athletes with its logo, but states these athletes are “role models both in and out of competition” and will “represent the ‘New Spirit of United’ during the games”.

Anyone going to PyeongChang for the Olympic Games?
