200 Free United Miles + New Fuel Partnership with BP

United Airlines and BP are partnering to offer you the chance to earn and burn and miles at the fuel pump.

On the earning side, you can earn up to three miles per gallon purchased by linking your MileagePlus number and form of payment to a BP Driver Rewards account:

  • One award mile for every gallon of fuel purchased
  • Two award miles for every gallon of fuel purchased with a linked debit or credit card
  • Three award miles for every gallon of premium-grade fuel purchased with a linked debit or credit card

Note this does not have to be on a United-branded credit card. Any linked credit or debit card will work. And that’s critical because the United-branded credit card is not a great card to place fuel purchases on. Instead, link to a card such as the Chase Freedom by Chase. This card offers quarterly bonus categories where you can earn up to 5x rewards during promo periods (five Chase points, which is equivalent to five cents back per dollar spent). Other cards routinely earn you a 2% cashback reward on fuel.

With the new BP-United partnership, you can also burn your miles to save on fuel at a rate of $0.50/gallon using 60 miles/gallon. Don’t even think about it…

I value United miles at 1.5 cents each. Your miles get you less than a penny per gallon if you burn them for fuel. There are far better uses for your miles.

200 Free United Miles

You can earn 200 free United miles after joining the BP Driver Rewards program and making your first fuel purchase with a linked credit card.

You can sign up here.

CONCLUSION

When properly stacked, the BP-United partnership is a great way to earn additional miles. But use this program to earn miles, not burn miles.

No BP stations in California. They left the state many years ago.

I buy my fuel at Costco anyway, but indeed–this promo is not for everyone.

Great way to keep your United miles from expiring. Maybe it me but I don’t see, on the link, how to get a BP Drivers Reward Number.

When you click the BP link in the article, it will give you the opportunity to create a BP account–right alongside connecting your UA account. It’s easy.

do you know if we can still sign up (even if we are CA residents) and just use this when we’re traveling to other states?

Unfortunately, CA residents are ineligible to sign up.

I’m bummed too considering all the Arcos we have.

Company Credit Card = Premium Fuel 3x I’m thinking. I guess my big question is can I link more than one card to the account. In addition I assume I can’t use the same linked card across various accounts like wife and mine both.

Do I simply use my credit card as normal once I link it to earn United miles or do I have to do some extra step at the pump?

You will also need to swipe, scan, or input your BP Rewards number. That number will be given to you when you register (and a physical card mailed).

If is sign up for this with a Chase Ink that already earns Chase points, or a Delta Skymiles Amex that already earns Skymiles, will I get both the points that come with the card PLUS the United miles?

      Yes, you will!
