United Airlines Updates Bistro On Board Menu For October 2023

United Airlines has shuffled its “Bistro On Board” menu in October with a number of new menu items available for purchase in economy class.

United Bistro On Board Menu – October 2023

Each month the buy onboard menu changes slightly on United Airlines. Last month, United offered peach oats and yogurt, a vegan breakfast bagel, and biscuits and gravy on breakfast flights. It offered cacio e pepe, an everything bun burger, and a cheese and fruit tray on lunch and dinner flights. For October 2023, United is shuffling the menu with a number of items. Let’s take a look.

United Breakfast Menu – October 2023

Breakfast items are available on flights over 1,190 miles that depart between  5:00 am and 9:59 am.

Mixed Berry Overnight Oats
Brown sugar and cinnamon flavored overnight oats served over a layer of mixed berry fruit puree

Farmers Breakfast Bowl (served warm)
Farmer’s Breakfast Bowl with barley, egg, plant-based sausage & vegetables

Ham and Cheese Panini (served warm)
Panini grilled sourdough with cage-free egg patty, Black Forest ham, Grand Cru cheese and blackberry bacon compote

Each breakfast selection is $8. Supplies are limited and United’s pre-ordering features does not allow these meals to be pre-reserved.

United Lunch/Dinner Menu – October 2023

Lunch/dinner items are also available on flights over 1,190 miles that depart between 10:00 am and 8:59 pm.

Fresh Cheese & Fruit Tray
Sharp Cheddar cheese, Fontiago cheese, Grand Cru cheese, Partners crackers, red seedless grapes, Bonne Maman fig preserves, Frango mint chocolate

Pimento Pretzel Burger
Beef Burger with green chile pimento and bacon jam on a pretzel bun

Southwest Shaker Salad
Layered salad shaker with brown rice, black beans, chili lime, diced chicken, roasted corn, red bell peppers, red onion, pepper jack cheese and cilantro

The burger or salad cost $10 while the fruit and cheese plate cost $8. Supplies are limited and United’s pre-ordering features does not allow these meals to be pre-reserved.

1K and Global Services members who are not upgraded are eligible for one complimentary food item and one complimentary alcoholic beverage. A recent glitch that improperly indicates that Bistro Onboard items were chargeable has been resolved.

CONCLUSION

I appreciate that United offers not only snack boxes and cold snacks, but a variety of hot items that rotate each month. That makes the economy class experience a bit more bearable.

I have been on the ground for seven weeks but gearing up for a multi-leg trip and it looks like the upgrade is not going to clear on one of the legs. That may give me a chance to try out one of the items above soon. If so, I will report back.

Sad to have missed the biscuits and gravy and the elimination of cacio e pepe. Biscuits and gravy were already gone in September

United is my first choice due to offering hot meals in coach and a lower mileage threshold to serve hot meals in first class than American and Delta. To my knowledge they’re the only airline to serve hot meals (buy onboard) on US inter-mainland flights.

I wanted to try it myself. Hopefully it will return.

I think UA has also lowered the mileage threshold for when these items are available this month. Previously it stated available on flights 4 hours or more. Now it specifically states available on flights over 1,190 miles. I always tried to order these meals on IAH-LGA and they said they were not available. But yesterday for the first time they were available on my IAH-LGA flight so looks like the menu has expanded to additional flights.

As a 1K who always sits in the exit row if I’m not upgraded, I have never been able to purchase any of the bistro items, because UA catering is too incompetent to load enough.
