When Magoo Flew: My Favorite Airplane-Themed Cartoon

Rather than talking about passengers abusing flight attendants or the latest mileage devaluations, let’s all take a six-minute break and enjoy a few laughs, courtesy of Mr. Magoo.

When Magoo Flew, A Humorous Masterpiece

There are many things that make me laugh: Mr. Bean, Little Britain…yes, that kind of humor. But even after all these years, I still enjoy watching Mr. Magoo and particularly When Magoo Flew, a 1954 animated short by Columbia Studios UPA.

The story centers on near-sighted Magoo, who mistakes an airport for a movie theatre. Rather than sitting down to enjoy a movie, he boards an airplane, thinking he is viewing a 3D movie. Magoo’s seatmate is a bank robber carrying stolen money and gets afraid when a police detective board the flight to look for him. He disappears, leaving his briefcase behind. Magoo sets out to look for him. Hilarity ensues.

If you have 6.5 minutes, enjoy this mini-movie. It’s a good laugh. Jim Backus (Mr. Howell on Gilligan’s Island) does a great Mr. Magoo!

Oh Magoo, you’ve done it again. The Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol special is still one of the best versions of that book every made – thanks for making me smile

Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of when life was much less complicated.
I was personally a big fan of Ricky and Bullwinkle. Life has turned out to be constantly watching out for Boris and Natasha.

    Hope your day improved.

It pains me and pleasures me to know the only cartoon I enjoyed in childhood is still funny today.

I read that Jim Backus felt typecast as Mr Magoo so he tried a stint on GIlligan’s Island…

Never was a fan of cartoons but do remember Speed Racer and Gigantor. Of course the original Superman (George Reeves) TV series, by far my favorite, was relatively cartoonish. My Mom always said if I was watching Superman, there could be an earthquake, a fire and a flood all at the same time and I wouldn’t even notice. Thanks for the memories Bob, I mean Matthew :-).
