When Pilots Sound Familiar

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 11, 2010 Leave a Comment

Do you ever sit down on an airplane and hear your own voice coming from the flight deck?

Yesterday evening I got on my BUR-SFO flight, settled in, and started reading a magazine when suddenly I thought I heard myself talking. We all have distinct voices and my tone, as Hunter likes to kid me about, is unique.

The First Officer welcomed us aboard and provided some flight information. His voice was almost identical to mine. I just thought that was a little weird because I’ve never heard someone who speaks just like I do.

I got up to SFO, flew down to LAX, then boarded my flight to IAD (which did not need any volunteers despite being F1,Y0). The First Officer came on and surprisingly sounded exactly like Lucky. Too weird. He rattled on for a few minutes and I swear it might as well have been Ben making those comments.

Now if it was just the BUR-SFO or just the LAX-IAD flight that this had occured, I would not have deemed it worthy of a blog post, but when it happened twice on the same night–well, I just had to mention it.

How often does this happen?
