Where Will You Go In 2014?
A reader recently engaged me in a conversation about taking large expanses of time to live abroad for leisure. It seemed that the reader (I’m speculating) was expressing concern or anxiety about what to do when the trip is over, returning back to the States without a place to live, or a job. This is a very real fear, and something we had to deal with when the Sherpa and Sherpstress returned recently.
But, despite what you have seen on TV, there are jobs in this country. We both found jobs within 10 days of moving to the east coast.
Moving away and even spending every last cent is of little concern, I know we can always fall back on friends and family if we ever fall on our faces, so there is very little risk in us going abroad and betting the farm. You may have a similar situation, where you will always have a bed with your friends and family if you need one. So why not go see the world?
Why post about 2014 though today?
Because today is a great day to start. Put away some money, in an envelope under your mattress. We try to put away just $100/week, and we never touch it. It’s $14/day ($7 each since there are two of us) and though $100/week might seem like more than you can spare, $14/day comes down to decisions. Decisions to eat at home as opposed to stopping for food. Decisions to not see a movie as opposed to going out, or even as simple as getting the smaller popcorn over the HUGE tub (we never finish either size, I have no idea what the bottom of the popcorn tub looks like).
At the end of the year we will have $5,200 in addition to anything else we have saved, though not a fortune, it will be enough for about 4 months in Thailand, about two months in Europe or six months in South America.
And at the end of the year, you will see posts about us going. And people will say, “I could never do that”, or “I don’t know how you do it” and we will politely reply, “It really all comes down to the popcorn.”
Today is the day to start your journey. Where will you go in 2014?

Good article covering choices. Always amazed at how friends view our finances because we travel but they have cable tv and 2 or more cars.
Tenmoc – it’s all about choices. Glad you enjoyed the article, feel free to pass it on.
Which bedroom has the bed with the money tucked underneath? Would save me some time and ransacking. 😉
