My 10 Worst Flights In 2019

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 31, 2019November 14, 2023 4 Comments

Unlike my 10 Best Flights of 2019 post from earlier today, I’d say this list is a bit more controversial. After all, how bad can any premium product really be?

But listing my 10 worst delayed domestic flights would hardly be worth a post. So here are my 10 worst flights of 2019, with the caveat that in some cases I am even more subjective than usual. You’ll notice more United flights, which makes sense considering how often I travel on United versus other carriers.

10. American Eagle ERJ-170 First Class, SEA-LAX

The flight was fine, my seat mate not so much. He was a nice enough guy, but it was the first time I’ve been pestered by a seat mate high on drugs.

9. United Airlines 787-9 Business Class, LAX-LHR

Overall, I find the service on United Airlines just fine, but it fell way short on this flight.

8. Ryanair 737-800, AMM-OTP

This was a very entertaining flight, to an extent, but I was ready to bolt by the time I reechoed Bucharest

7. EasyJet A321, FCO-BSL

EasyJet Switzerland Review

My worst delay of the year, my EasyJet flight was very late, spoiling my Saturday plans with my family.

6. British Airways A320 Economy Class, LHR-BSL

With one exception (#1 below), I’ve never felt more crammed than I did on this flight. I could not even open my laptop, proving once and for all that I do not fly in Ba economy class shorthaul.

5. United Airlines 777-200 Business Class, ORD-LAX

The flight was fine, but I was so sick I could barely move. I dragged myself onboard and lay there without moving for the duration of the flight. It’s rare that I skip a meal, but the very thought of food repulsed me. It’s horrible to fly when you are sick…

4. United Airlines 787-8 Business Class, ZRH-SFO

Oh Augustine. My son was a little rascal on this flight, making it perhaps the most second-most stressful flight of the year.

3. United Express CRJ-200, BUR-SFO

The feeling of being trapped on an airplane is one of the worst in the world.

2. SriLankan A321 Business Class, CMB-KUL

An out-of-control child turned this into a frustrating flight.

1. Lufthansa A380 Economy Class, LAX-FRA

A seating snafu landed me in a middle seat in the last row of the plane. Ouch.

CONCLUSION

All things considered, I had a pretty smooth year of travel. While the flights above were not all that great, it could have been much worse.

What was your worst flight in 2019?

If this were to happen to me, it would definitely make my list! The 777 being towed spun the parked 321. Fortunately both were empty.

China Airlines business class, especially SFO to TPE. Now, it’s ok, to be completely fair. However, it failed my expectations so badly. From all (seriously, all of them) glowing online reviews, I was expected like the best time ever. And it was, well, forgettable (given that I fly international biz once a year or so, forgettable is a really really big failure). The seat was ok, but dirty. The food was plain. The service was forgettable. The lounges were horribly over crowded (SFO lounge feels like doctor waiting room).

Oh cmon man. Two of the flights were because of personal issues. Surely, you can find two more where the airline actually screwed up?
