Usually when I write about 100,000 I am talking about a credit card offer or achieving top-tier status. Not so today, sadly.
Over the weekend, the New York Times ran a poignant front cover simply listing the names of many who died from COVID-19.
Yesterday, per John Hopkins University, the death count in the USA for COVID-19 officially crossed the 100,000 mark.
While thousands die around the world every day due to disease and ordinary causes, this is still a staggering number. Because it’s not just a number. It is 100,000 lives. Families, friends, and loved ones who are no longer with us.
There is such a partisan divide in the United States and the entire pandemic has represented a missed opportunity to rally together, a tragic consequence that will continue to have far-reaching effects on American life.
Whatever your politics and wherever you wish to assign blame, this is certainly a period in which we should rally together in common cause to protect life, protect business, and help one another.
I’m so pleased at the way my neighbors have come together to help one another. I am thankful my church has started making food deliveries to the most vulnerable so they do not have to venture out to the grocery store. And I’m deeply thankful that whether objectively helpful or not, here in Los Angeles we are following health guidelines to stem the spread of virus. People are working together, even if our politicians are not.
CONCLUSION
Death is part of life. And yet we still mourn for the untimely passing of so many due to an invisible enemy. Whether death counts have been under-counted or over-counted is not really what matters. Instead, what matters is that millions of people in the USA and even more around the world are mourning the departure of those they loved sooner than they expected. Let us give them love during this time…
250~300k dead in USA by the end of year is entirely plausible, and I daresay likely.
Sadly, we’ll never know the true total, as vested interests publish and refute a lower/higher number however it suits their interests

Biden and Trump both suffer from dementia.
US is at 312 dead per 1M people. That’s still a lot better than e.g. UK at 558 dead per 1M people. I assume both have equal amounts of unaccounted Covid-19 related deaths as UK didn’t take the virus serious either.
This is why Matthew should not fly for now. He should, as I will, consider buying 9 seats (or maybe 4 J class seats) to create guaranteed social distancing when he restarts flying. Even then, 6 ft is no guarantee as a cough can travel 18 ft. but coughing while wearing a mask doesn’t go as far. Asymptomatic people spread it a lot.
Uhm…no one died that wasn’t already going to die someday. Things like this happen. Welcome to the human condition.
