It appears Aegean Airlines will take delivery of Airbus A321XLR aircraft originally intended for JetBlue—and with them, launch new long-haul service to India. This is an exciting new chapter for the Greek carrier.
Aegean To Acquire A321XLRs (From JetBlue?), Launch Long-Haul Flights To India
Aegean Airlines has announced the purchase of two Airbus A321XLR aircraft, set to enter service in the first half of 2026. These aircraft will feature a new premium cabin layout with lie-flat business class seats and will be used to inaugurate nonstop service from Athens (ATH) to New Delhi (DEL) beginning in March 2026 and later Mumbai (BOM) in May 2026. Both routes will operate five times weekly.
While not confirmed by Aegean, the aircraft are widely believed to be units originally destined for JetBlue. That carrier has scaled back its long-haul ambitions amid financial pressures and leadership changes, and Aegean has seized the opportunity to acquire aircraft with a premium configuration already well-suited to long-haul travel.
This marks a strategic shift for Aegean, which has until now focused on short- and medium-haul routes within Europe and the broader Mediterranean region. The airline’s current longest flights reach the Gulf (Abu Dhabi and Dubai), but the A321XLR’s extended range—over 4,000 nautical miles—opens the door to more distant markets in Asia and potentially sub-Saharan Africa.
According to Aegean, the A321XLRs will be configured with 138 seats, including 24 lie-flat seats in business class and 114 seats in economy. The aircraft will also feature a new in-flight entertainment system and upgraded cabin amenities. JetBlue had two A321XLRs on order with the same configuration, but canceled them.

The decision to enter the Indian market reflects growing demand for direct connectivity between Greece and India for both leisure and business travel. Currently, no nonstop flights exist between the two nations.
Aegean also announced it will acquire Airbus A321LRs, which will be delivered in 2027 and 2028. Aegean hints that future destinations under consideration include:
- Almaty (ALA)
- Bangalore (BLR)
- Lagos (LOS)
- Maldives (MLE)
- Nairobi (NBO)
- Seychelles (SEY)
CONCLUSION
Aegean’s move to acquire JetBlue-configured A321XLRs and launch service to India signals a new chapter in the airline’s development. With these aircraft, Aegean will break into the long-haul market with a competitive product and tap into an underserved route network. While only two aircraft have been ordered for now, the step is a calculated and symbolic one, positioning the airline to test demand and possibly scale future long-haul operations beyond Europe. I’m excited to fly one of these new routes in 2026!
Ouch!! Hard to believe B6 gave up two XLR jets.
The number of sleeper units could have been dialed back for Central America or Caribbean service.
Or the jets could have been used to up Euro frequency to London or Paris.
Old news, Aegean order their A21NLRs at least a year ago.
Yes, but we hadn’t been expecting them to start the long flights in the next few months. I’m not interested in visiting India, but I am definitely hoping to go to the likes of NBO and maybe even ZNZ with Aegean.
