Southern California Airport Converted To Drive-In Theatre

Matthew Klint Posted onJune 12, 2020June 12, 2020 4 Comments

With most flights grounded, one Southern California airport is converting into a makeshift drive in movie theatre.

Ontario International Airport, a San Bernardino County airport east of Los Angeles, will host four drive-in movie nights in its largest parking lot.

Movies will be shown on a 50-foot screen and with audio delivered to your car’s FM radio.

Here’s the movie schedule:

  • “Ford v Ferrari” – June 19th
  • “The Sandlot” – July 3
  • “The Princess Bride” – July 17
  • “Napoleon Dynamite” – July 31

If you are interested, you might sign up here in advance for a slot. Cars are limited 300. The first showing is already sold out and sign-ups have not yet opened for the additional three movie nights.

Doors open at 7:00PM and the movie begins at 8:30PM.

Food trucks onsite will include:

  • Poutine Brothers
  • Grilled Cheese Truck
  • Afters Ice Cream
  • My Delight Cupcakery

Ontario Airport has been the site of many airport filming including:

  • “Ford v Ferrari” (2019)
  • “Argo” (2012)
  • “Catch Me If You Can” (2002)
  • “A League of Their Own” (1992)
  • “Up in the Air” (2009)

If you attend, bring along canned goods. The airport will be collecting donation for local food banks.

Ontario may be the first airport in the USA to convert some of its space into a drive-in theatre, but not the first in the world. Vilnius International Airport in Lithuania has used the pandemic shutdown to convert its tarmac to a drive-in movie theatre.

CONCLUSION

Ontario Airport, even though situated in the greater Los Angeles metropolis, has a hometown feel and plenty of space. Unlike Los Angeles International or even Hollywood-Burbank Airport, it is the perfect venue for a drive-in movie.

Will I go? With a 3-year old and 3-week old? Not a chance. But I hope some of you can.

Would you travel to an airport to see a movie? How else could airpots be innovative during the pandemic slowdown?

    Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
You might want to do one more proofread of this. Lots of little typos/ missed prepositions/ lack of subject / verb agreement throughout. Made the read a little halting.

I guess it would’ve been too reasonable to make the headline, “Airport parking lot used to show movie” huh? Instead, click bait it to sound like an entire airport is being changed. Great work.

Just moved to Newport. I’d like to go for the Sandlot with my son but that’s a hell of a drive. Thanks for the idea though.
