“Indecent Exposure Incident” Leads To Closure Of South Carolina Airport, Flight Cancellations

A half-naked woman sighted running down a runway at Florence Airport in South Carolina led to a temporary airport shutdown and two flight cancellations.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office reported “a partially clothed woman sprinted through the airport’s runway and into a nearby wooded area.” That led to an airport shutdown for two-hours as police combed the wooded area for the suspect. Eventually, K-9 units were brought in and she was found, wearing only underwear, hiding in a ditch.

One American Airlines flight scheduled to land in Florence was cancelled and another departing flight to Charlotte was cancelled. Several flights circled in the air while the police circled the ground in search of the woman.

An angry passenger vented to local ABC affiliate WPDE:

We flew from Charlotte and had to circle around for an hour and a half. Just landed back in Charlotte with no available seats left for the remainder of the day. Felony charges should be brought against this lady for disrupting so many passengers. Whose call was it to shut down an entire airport?

The woman, who was taken to hospital for a mental health evaluation, faces charges of trespass and indecent exposure. But no charges have been filed yet. The event occurred on Sunday.

CONCLUSION

I’m not making any jokes about the woman here: I hope she gets the help she needs. Perhaps shutting down the airport was a bit of an overreaction, though. But if a drone sighting can shutdown London Gatwick for several days I guess a half-naked woman shutting down an airport for two hours isn’t too bad.
