Mainz is one of my favorite cities in Germany and I recently found a great new coffee shop that makes me even more excited to return.
Great Coffee In Mainz, Germany
The coffee shop is called Maldaner and it is located in Mainz’s quaint historic Altstadt “old town.” The small coffee chain also has a café in nearby Wiesbaden.

I knew the coffee would be good when I saw the La Marzocco coffee machine, flat whites on the menu, and a roaster on-site. The decor was also minimalist, often a good indicator of third wave coffee.
Indeed, I was not disappointed. I ordered one cappuccino and one flat white (a flat white is a bit stronger, with a more concentrated espresso and just textured milk instead of textured milk plus milk foam).
Both looked identical, but the flat white was stronger and perfectly made.
As I sat outside at table on the cobblestone street, I had to smile. How thankful I am to be able to travel to Germany again.
I try to speak German in Germany, but the barista caught wind I was from California and switched to English. He mentioned the coffee shop just opened earlier this year and that the main location is in Wiesbaden.
Usually when I am in Mainz, I just have a cappuccino with my Spaghettieis at nearby Da Vito. While that’s still a nice more genuinely Italian cappuccino, I preferred the stronger and darker roast at Maldaner.
If you’re in Mainz, give it a try.
What do you consider the best coffee in Mainz, Germany?
At least 10 euros
So would you recommend Old Town Mainz over Old Town Frankfurt?
I’m not a coffee drinker, but in regards to just visiting the area, I’d take Mainz over Frankfurt Altstadt – been to both and Mainz is more interesting to me. The Dom is there and you are close to the river; very scenic. I especially enjoy walking around Mainz during Christmas market time.
Each his own, of course….
Can’t speak to Mainz as I’ve never visited, but I was not overly impressed with the old town (Römerberg) area of FRA. Maybe it was jetlag. But I will admit, some of the best Jägerschnitzel I’ve ever had was at a little place there called Römer Pils Brunnen.
I’m totally getting a Spaghettieis in Frankfurt this Saturday.
Matthew – what is your recommended hotel in Mainz? We stayed at the Hilton by the river. It is an older property but totally serviceable.
I bet he will tell you it‘s Hyatt 😉
Yes, Hyatt for sure!
Save a bomb for Mainz. Was the saying in 8th AF after unarmed airman who were shot down were murdered while parachuting. By the end of the war the city was wiped off the map. Every crew on the return randomly dropped what was left on their rack.
What do you think Germans said about the firebombing of Dresden?

This is a great find; thanks for sharing. I’m flying into Frankfurt in a few weeks and it looks like this coffee shop is only 20 minutes from the airport. I’ll make it a point to stop in.
