Context Matters: Did Biden Actually Say Airlines Charging Extra For Legroom Is Racist?

President Biden made headlines for his latest gaffe, suggesting that airlines that charge extra for additional legroom are racist. But text outside of context is simply a pretext for misunderstanding. I’m going to give the President the benefit of the doubt here.

Biden Gaffe Suggesting Airline Legroom Upcharges Are Racist Must Be Put In Context

I’ve read numerous headlines suggesting President Biden called extra-legroom fees racist. But while the President has never been articulate, I think it is important to look at his speech and these specific words in context.

On Wednesday, Biden outlined his administration’s plan to “protect American consumers from junk fees.” He spent the initial part of his speech savaging bank fees, including bounced check and overdraft fees which Biden suggested unfairly target unsuspecting consumers.

Then he pivoted to other hidden fees, including concert ticketing fees and resort fees. These will become illegal, he announced.

Next, Biden pivoted to airline fees.

“Last summer, if your flight was canceled or delayed, only one top airline guaranteed that you could rebook for free, even because they’re the ones who cancelled you, not you; you didn’t fail to show up.  They can — they — they cancelled.”

I am not sure what airline Biden is referring to, but I do not know of any airline that historically failed to re-accommodate you if the delay or cancellation was within the airline’s control.

Finally, he pivoted to seating fees:

“The Department of Transportation is working on rules that would require airlines and travel sites to disclose fees up front, fees like things if you want to sit next to your young child.  Well, guess what?  Or your — check your baggage or change your ticket.

“You’re going to be surprised.  They’re going to charge you for that without telling you.  Your ticket is going to cost a heck of a lot more.”

To my knowledge, all these fees must already be disclosed and passengers who book so-called “basic economy” tickets are explicitly warned they may be separated from loved ones. At this point of maturity in the U.S. airline market, I find it difficult to believe there are “surprises” for charges for items like seat assignments and baggage that have not been included for years. This is not 2011 or even 2017.

Then Biden transitions to internet fees, lambasting the laundry list of fees that are tacked on to the monthly service charge each month. He sums up this part of the speech with a general statement:

“I’m not saying they can’t charge it, but they got to let you know they’re going to charge it.  You can make a decision.”

That seems fair enough to me.

For good measure, he throws in:

“Some airlines, if you want six more inches between you and the seat in front, you pay more money.  But you don’t know it until you purchase your ticket.”

I’m going to guess this was an off-script remark that he threw in there instead of continuing directly to his broader point, which came next:

“Look, folks, these are junk fees.  They’re unfair, and they hit marginalized Americans the hardest, especially low-income folks and people of color.  They benefit big corporations, not consumers, not working families.  And that changes now.”

I don’t think Biden meant that charging extra for legroom was racist or unfair or particularly predatory against people of color. Instead, I think he rambled like he always does and maybe even did not know what he was saying. His point was that all the fees that the Administration is targeting target people of color.

Am I being too charitable to Biden? I am not sure suggesting the POTUS was lost in his train of thought is all that charitable. But it is not politically motivated to suggest we must look a the context to understand what Biden meant by his comments.

He continued:

“You know, we’ve been working on this for a while.  I know it’s been a tough few years.  But from day one, my administration has been laser-focused on easing the burden facing working-class families and giving them, as my dad would say again, just a little breathing room. And because of the steps we’ve taken, the United States is in a stronger position today than any other country in the world, economically.”

See, we are happy to castigate rightful offenders on Live And Let’s Fly, especially when it comes to poor behavior onboard flights or at airports. But I hope to always do it fairly…not without cause.

Biden has never been gifted with the ability to clearly articulate his thoughts, but I think the context is pretty clear that he did not mean to imply that charging for extra legroom seats was racist.

CONCLUSION

Biden may not be articulate, but I do not think he meant to imply that charging more for extra legroom is racist. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, here.

Finally, let me voice my strong support for one such proposed modification: transparent resort fees. Live And Let’s Fly has condemned so-called “resort fees” for over a decade. The problem is not the resort fees themselves (I do not like them, but companies are free to charge them), but when they are not disclosed at the very outset, tricking people into clicking further or making a reservation based upon a bait-and-switch price. It is high time the U.S. outlaws such pricing opaqueness. Advocating for transparency should not be a controversial position.

joey is lost & he knows what he says quite often is a flat out lie , no matter how they try to spin it.

People should be wise enough to reject anyone who plays identity politics.

How can those fees affect anyone other than the actual consumers?

Will it affect low income folks or people or color if they don’t fly or stay in the hotels? I don’t think so.
Does he mean all people of colors are poor? I don’t think so
Does he mean all low-income people are people of color? I don’t think so.

What exactly was his intention for bringing up people of color and low-income people in this context?

If you have clear principles and thoughts, you can ultimately articulate them. Biden has flipped and flopped and lied his entire political career. He has no clear principles other than whatever he feels will get him through the next election. Nobody can clearly articulate principles that change depending upon what day it is. Stop excusing/defending another politician who has clearly proven to have never had an iota of integrity. It’s why we have the quality (or complete lack thereof) of government we have. Just stop.

Stronger consumer protection laws in the United States would be great. Honestly, I think changes to the airline model are misguided. The airlines have been forced to get it right. Hotels, and any other industry that engages in drip pricing, should have to follow the airline pricing model.

Hidden fees are dishonest, and I support proposals to make them more transparent, but they aren’t racist. What is racist is the endless rhetoric by the political left that assumes that people of color are stupid (they aren’t!) “They can’t use a computer…they don’t know how to get an ID…they can’t understand how baggage fees work…they can’t balance their checkbook…etc.” This paternalistic nonsense needs to stop. People of color, particularly young people, need leaders who believe the truth that they are smart and capable enough to do, build and achieve absolutely anything, and they don’t need the government to fix all of their problems.

No. When you a decent person and you have the unfortunate event of stroke that highly diminishes your ability to perform your expected duties fully, you simply leave the spot for another candidate that can fulfill the expected needs. But when power talks louder, you just keep going even knowing you cannot perform your duties well. And that goes for both, the president and the candidate for Senate. They are both impaired by their health but they put power ahead of everything.

I get Biden (and Matt’s) point, but consider that the highest income ethnicity/race in the USA is Asian which is considered a minority. Therefore, airline junk fees that impact lower income people do not disproportionately impact people of color. But then again, let’s consider this rationally: the low-fare airlines such as Frontier and Spirit which notoriously engage in junk fees have made travel affordable for the lower classes that include impoverished whites and African Americans. When we see articles about bad behavior by these groups at the airports and in the air, it’s fare, er, “fair” game to mock them if they’re white but sort of risky to do it if they’re African American. Democrats have little compassion for working class whites hence why that group tends to vote Republican. (Hint: If you want people to vote for you, it would help to not mock them so much.)

It’s sad that exploiting the, pun intended, poor money management skills of the poor has been going on for centuries. When Lufthansa wanted to charge my father-in-law $150 for a checked bag, I was educated enough to void that fee (he cried about it) but a poor person whose rarely traveled before wouldn’t be able to. Vices such as cigarettes, junk food, rental-appliances and so on prey upon the poor. I sympathize with them regardless of their skin-color. It’s exponential blessing to be “privileged” (in the classic sense) with a stable upbringing and education to be able to spot and avoid scams better than the poor who ought to have better street smarts.

For fun, I freeze-framed a Aaron’s ad for “rent to own” TV’s and they wanted 4 years of payments for a big screen TV that was retail cost $800. I figured that if they just put the money into a jar, they’d pay for it in 8 months. The print was super tiny but on my 47″ TV, readable when I got up close. When I grew up, we had home economics classes and that’s the kind of stuff that the teachers should cover (back then, we learned how to balance a checkbook and such.)

Context? To understand context you have to understand what’s he’s saying in the first place! Hard to do with his ramblings. But I think his political heart is in the right place. Maybe…

Appreciate you need clicks but why did you walk into this buzzsaw? Isn’t your credibility worth something? Hard for most of us to believe you actually meant what you wrote here. One of the few unifying global forces – held by D and R alike; US and other nations – is that Uncle Joe’s words are worth little more then a shrug. Truly nobody, even those in his party, listens to anything he says.

He’s still the POTUS. I thought it was important to put his words in context.

The fact that journalists, politicians from both sides of the aisle, and even his own aides have to walk back, clarify, or “re-frame” the majority of what he says means we are at the mercy of thousands of random interpretations every time he opens his mouth.

It’s dangerous (and pathetic) when a national leader’s words cannot be taken at face value.
