As we approach the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, I decided the time was right to make a trip to the capital city of Kyiv. I want to see for myself how the Ukrainians are handling Russian...
During my trip to Ukraine, one of the highlights was exploring the rich history of Kyiv. From the stunning architecture of the Saint Sophia Cathedral to the moving memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives in the war, every corner of the city told a story. Walking through the cobblestone streets and taking in the sights and sounds of this ancient city was a truly unforgettable experience.
I also had the opportunity to visit the famous Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The intricate frescoes and gold-domed churches were absolutely breathtaking. Learning about the monastery's history and its importance to the Ukrainian people was a fascinating glimpse into the cultural and religious heritage of the country.
Sampling Ukrainian Cuisine
No trip to Ukraine would be complete without sampling the delicious traditional cuisine. From hearty borscht and savory pierogies to sweet varenyky and fluffy pampushky, I indulged in a variety of dishes that showcased the country's culinary diversity. The local markets were a feast for the senses, with vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and artisanal cheeses.
I also had the chance to try some homemade moonshine called horilka, a popular Ukrainian spirit. The strong drink warmed me up on the cold winter nights and added an extra layer of authenticity to my culinary experience. Overall, the food in Ukraine was a highlight of my trip, and I can't wait to come back and explore more of the country's gastronomic offerings.
