Climate activists broke onto the runway at Frankfurt Airport today and glued themselves to the tarmac, forcing a temporary halt to flights. It’s time to severely punish these thugs for their misguided advocacy.
Hundreds Of Flights Cancelled, Delayed, Or Diverted After Climate Activists Break Into Frankfurt Airport
The incident occurred earlier this morning, July 25, 2024, just after 7:00 am local time. A group of climate activists from The Last Generation, which calls itself a national student-led climate research organization focused on raising awareness for the climate movement among youth, breached the security perimeter of the airport and glued themselves to the runway.
Their action caused the temporary closure of the airport, forcing flight cancellations and delays and at least 40 inbound flights to divert to other German airports.
Frankfurt Airport issued a statement saying:
“This morning, climate activists gained illegal access to Frankfurt Airport. For safety reasons, flight operations had to be temporarily suspended for the entire airport as a result of the incident.
“We sharply condemn these unauthorized demonstrations, and we reserve the right to take legal action against the participants. Their activities pose severe danger to flight operations – possibly putting human life at risk.”
I hope they do take legal action against the participants for civil damages and I hope that German prosecutors also go after these thugs.
You can strongly believe in your cause, but you better be prepared to accept responsibility for your actions. When your actions disrupt commerce and put others at risk, you should be punished in order to deter others from doing the same thing. I’d love to see a 10-year jail sentence and a €1 million fine for every hooligan who participated in today’s action.
Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has called out for more severe prison sentences:
“These actions are dangerous, stupid and criminal. Those who block runways not only risk their own lives, but also endanger others and harm all travelers. These acts must be punished more severely. We have proposed severe prison sentences.”

It is unacceptable to cripple commerce because of your Talibanistinc zeal for your cause. In developed nations, the root of change lies through moral suasion and the ballot box, not vigilantism. My own opinion is that any solution to the “climate crisis” includes adaptation and cultivating technology to address rising temperatures and sea levels, because you’re not willing to curb consumption and I’m not either…and developing nations like India and China certainly are not. If there is anything humans can do (and that is not at all clear to me), our “solution” lies in desalination, carbon capture, and the next great technology to turn climate change into something useful.
CONCLUSION
Climate activists managed to breach the security perimeter of Frankfurt Airport and cause flight disruptions today by gluing themselves to the runway. Flight operations have resumed, but the disruption during the peak morning travel time meant hundreds of flights were delayed, canceled, or forced to divert. It’s time to hold thugs like this more accountable for their selfish and misguided actions.
It’s less slowing commerce and more that incoming 747s and A380s with fewer viable diversion airports then have to scramble to find one they have enough fuel to reach that’s the biggest problem here, and the threat to human life imo
….the ballot box…hahahahahahaha….how’s that going?
helps to UNDERSTAND what is going on first…then question — why is “climate science” so off…many of the changes we see now…WERE not supposed to happen for decades and decades…and many things going on, don’t fit the current climate model.

don’t need to agree with any religious angles…but until you look those up or similar…and do honest detailed research,
one is clueless about what is really going on.
Why did animals start dying en masse starting from around 2012….[oh never mind…most people don’t care about nature
in that way]
When did sinkholes start forming all over the place? Is that caused by CO2?

It is genuinely sad that the university system, with help from social media, has created a death cult of young people who think this sort of crime is reasonable. It is time to do what their parents and the educational system were unable to do, which is to teach them that actions have consequences. No matter how strongly you feel about an issue, you simply do not get to forcibly disrupt other people’s lives to demand attention. If you feel that climate change/Ukraine/Gaza /abortion/gun control/whatever is that important, then by all means, spend your life raising money, calling elected officials, attending lawful protests, and otherwise legally and peacefully supporting your cause. Society just cannot function when groups of people think that their issue is important enough that it warrants the destruction of property or the interruption of transportation (through which people are undoubtedly seeking important medical treatment, attending family weddings/funerals, or otherwise attending to vitally important, time-sensitive issues). Matthew is right that only severe consequences are going to stop this behavior.
Feel really bad for the passengers who got their flights canceled
These are the shock troops of the progressives you vote for. Maybe you think you will get a high enough social credit score that they will still allow you to fly–but I would not count on it.
The only reason they keep doing this is because people are too soft and let them achieve their goal which is to cause disruptions. Leave them glued there. A moron like this would be a small bump on the road for a A380 or a 747 so these planes can just run them over and won’t feel much at all. Once you let planes run them over just once, I can guarantee you the other cult members won’t do this again.
If we were talking interstates, I’d be inclined to agree. Runways, not so much only because their actions could cause catastrophic damage to the plane and ultimately hurt members on board.
They see themselves as heroes. It’s a merit badge for them, and they’d like to think themselves in the category of Shindler or, maybe, the Tiananmen Square guy. They illegally break into and occupy a university’s building and are shocked that they face consequences like arrest and expulsion from the university. Sadly, while they aren’t expecting punishment, they would see their serving serious time as making them another Mandela. Of course, this isn’t just an issue of the left. Think January 6.
Oh, but still give them major time.
For future activists, glue removal is painful when someone decides to rip you off the runway. Protests that cause more damage to your goal make you less credible.
Not too long ago, German police simply jackhammered the road around a protesters’ hand and he ended up carrying around a hunk of asphalt. Do this more often and let them seek medical help on their own, rather than wasting police time and resources trying to gently remove their glued hands. Bet the sight of a group of activists with asphalt limbs would make some people think twice.
Better yet, start cutting off limbs and leave them on the road. I bet this insanity comes to an end real quick.
Bingo 🙂
I think this is more of a revelation of how weak the security is at FRA. It’s not like we’re talking about some single runway airport in a third world country.
Ironic that their actions only increased carbon emissions, as aircraft had to either divert to another airport, which only adds an additional flight to restage the aircraft, or go into holding until able to land.
My favorite response was Volkswagen, when climate activists glued themselves to the floor of their museum. The staff simply ignored them, then turned out the lights and went home for the day and left them glued to the floor overnight. The activists complained they were not given food or the ability to use restrooms. Bet they don’t try that again.
The sad thing is that these people have actually been brainwashed into believing that the relatively small and gradual rising of global temperatures is some existential threat that’s going to kill everyone in a couple of years. This is utter nonsense.
The entire “climate change” push is a brilliant plan by the degrowth movement teamed with some very elite elites to reach mutual goals. And it’s a brilliant plan: temperatures are slowly rising (as they have been since the mini ice age of the mid 1800s) and humans likely are CONTRIBUTING to it (not causing it outright). Take those nuggets of truth, bend and twist them into fables, indoctrinate teachers and let it run. This is what’s happening. And there are critics and they’re called “deniers”. Some argue very poorly saying that there’s no warming. No, there is. But it’s about 1/10th of what you’re being told. And the media would have you believe you’re going to burn to death. Every heat wave is hyped like crazy. In truth, not a one is unprecedented. Right now, they’re saying it’s “the hottest summer in world history!”. For one thing, there’s no way that’s true. Secondly, have you heard about the cold weather in the southern hemisphere? ( https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/jul/22/qld-weather-cold-snap-queensland-temperature-brisbane-cape-york) This goes both ways, but itsn’t reported that way.
No wonder you have otherwise intelligent young people acting as if they’re mentally ill. It’s not their fault.
FRAnkly, if you ask me, Lufthansa management deserves this. Crappy airline, meet crappy hub situation.
Great ideas:
– Jackhammer about 10-20kg of concrete per glued limb and let them deal with their own glue.
– Robust prosecution and significant prison time.
– Germany computes additional CO2 emissions due to diversions, disrupted travel of 1000s, and Publishes Widely. Shame them over their climate irresponsibility.

This is brilliant. Today’s protest added X tons of CO2 to the atmosphere equivalent to the daily output of Y gasoline vehicles.
The conservationist Sierra Club had a position that overpopulation, immigration and migration were a key issue and they were bought and paid off. Technology cannot solve a problem when populations grow to consume any benefits similar to, say, converting lighting to LED and then people start using more LED lights everywhere. I call it The Costco effect.
Ironically, eco-warriors only cause issues that contribute to climate change as they force flights to divert and consume more fuel or people idling on freeways for hours. People still need to get to work and take granny to the hospital.
What would help tremendously would be old cities coming back: People living local rather than in the suburbs but again, that would confront certain PC paradigms such as diversity being wonderful and then people quietly spending money to live away from diversity.
Travel is a wonderful thing but most don’t gain the necessary lessons. I travel to Japan, Europe, and even South America to better understand cultures, what makes them good or bad, or better insights into my own rather than just have a good time looking at pretty buildings. Culture is the opposite of The Melting Pot where every mall looks alike with the same stuff inside we celebrate in the states but yet also fly away from.
Appalling action and scary insight on (non)security at FRA
There are proper ways to protest and improper ways to do so. The busting onto the airport tarmac is the latter.
The airport security perimeters aren’t all that difficult to violate, and it’s even easier when the potential trespassers include enough participants to quickly and suddenly make a distributed effort to trespass and trespass quickly without needing and using much staging time out in the open easily visible to those in charge of security. 50 prepared protesters willing to engage in crime can quite easily get some through across the outdoor airport security perimeters — or even from the departure areas airside at an airport if getting a little creative — and onto the tarmac if they come with adequate planning and a bit of basic equipment to do so. To stop such a group of 50 protesters at a typical major airport in say Europe, the US or Canada would probably require no fewer than probably 150 “security” personnel in response to a trespass already achieved by protesters. In high-income countries, it’s not cheap to keep 150 security personnel around the clock to just deal with potential trespassers at an airport.
I believe the climate crisis is very real, and identify strongly with the protesters’ cause.
I also have high respect to anyone willing to put themselves at risk for a cause, and bear the consequences.
I have very little respect for those claiming that it’s unfair if the consequences involve a chainsaw.
If only they could have all been ingested in some aircraft engines.
