Model Brings “Emotional Support Casserole” on American Airlines Flight

What does a biting dog, peacock, and casserole have in common? All three serve in an emotional support capacity for the traveling public.

Remember model Chrissy Teigen? She’s the one who tweeted about the 8hr ANA flight from Los Angeles to Angeles last December (recall their was a stowaway onboard). She’s a prolific traveler and very well-versed in the the nuances of airline loyalty and premium cabins. Now she had waded into the emotional support debate.

She took to Twitter to ask American Airlines–

If I don’t have a carry-on, can I bring a large ceramic casserole dish of scalloped potatoes on the plane? I am not kidding, is this okay? Is it too blunt/heavy an object? I’ll cry if they throw it away.

Three minutes later she asked AA to confirm–

@AmericanAir please help me

A conversation with AA ensued and Teigen referred to her potato dish as an “emotional support casserole”:

AA said yes. What about the TSA?

That's a good question, Christine! Scalloped potatoes are allowed in carry-on and checked bags. You can place them in a ceramic casserole dish. We hope you enjoy!

So she got to work:

She made it…

CONCLUSION

Whether she knows it or not (and I suspect she does and this is her intent), Teigen has added fuel to the flame of the emotional support animal debate. Her humor exposes the absurdity of the current policy and once again illustrates the need to revisit the oft-abused rules governing these sorts of pets, which should never be confused with true service animals.

She’s a serious #avgeek. She knows what she’s doing. She’s said that if she wasn’t a supermodel she’d want to be an airline blogger with a focus on inflight catering.

I’ll look the other way on her emotional support casserole, on the condition that she brings an extra fork and plate to share with this avgeek-cum-amateur-foodie in Main Cabin. LOL

An experienced flyer needed to ask if she was allowed to bring a tupperware container of food onboard a flight?

If you can’t grok the humor here I don’t know what to tell you. Top notch troll job.

This is actually damn funny. Love it. Hey, a woman’s gotta eat, right?

Very good. But that’s not a ceramic casserole dish. It’s a Le Crueset ceramic coated cast iron Dutch oven. Just by itself it must weight 10 pounds. You could easily crack someone’s skull with that lid.

I think she was lucky to get through. 😉
