Delta Air Lines surprised many of us by announcing the early retirement of its entire Boeing 777 fleet due to the pandemic. Now the final Delta 777 flight has been penciled in for the last day of this month. Tickets are on sale now and still available.

Final 777 Flight On Delta Air Lines

In May, Delta announced it would retire its 777 fleet despite recently completing an interior retrofit that modernized all three cabins of service.

Delta will offer two domestic farewell flights on the 777 this month, both to Los Angeles International Airport.

  • October 30, 2020
    • Delta Flight 8787
    • Atlanta (ATL) — Los Angeles (LAX)
    • 3:00 p.m. — 4:30 p.m.
  • October 31, 2020
    • Delta Flight 8807
    • New York (JFK) — Los Angeles (LAX)
    • 1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.

Tickets run from $149 in economy class to $1,700 in business class. Economy and premium economy are available on both flights, while business is now sold out on the final JFK-LAX flight on October 31st. Mileage seats are also available, starting at 16,000 SkyMiles (or 12,500 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points).

Delta has not announced if there will be special festivities onboard the flight, but those are typical on these sorts of farewell flights.

The Airbus A350 will become Delta’s new flagship aircraft. Interestingly, the A350 cannot travel from Johannesburg to Atlanta nonstop, which is one reason Delta will commence a triangle route that includes a return via Cape Town.

CONCLUSION

I’m on the fence about whether to go. I’ve never been on a Delta 777 before, which shows you how little I actually do stray beyond United domestically. But retirement flights are always fun and I’m at least open to the possibility.

Will you traveling on Delta’s final 777 flight?

I really want to go but presidential proclamations from April make it really difficult for me due to being a European passport holder 🙁

Would have to spend two weeks somewhere else in order to even get in the US and then quarantine on return for another two weeks because of the pandemic numbers in the US. Retirement flights are always fun and given you have the opportunity to go I would, because you are in the fantastic position for it not to be too difficult to get on. I am very jealous and as long as you take sensible precautions the risk to you will be quite low I expect.

Several years ago I flew on a Delta 777 ATL-JNB in their old business class. The hard product on such a long flight left much to be desired.

The sad thing, for Delta, is that all 777s have been retrofitted with the new Delta One Suites.

I would not go on such flights. Delta is nothing special and the 777 isn’t either. Covid-19 is no laughing matter.

All this cloth mask and social distancing helps but still is only lackadaisical measures. Surgical masks or N95 masks are more effective. Also the cloth mask and social distancing does not protect against aerosolized transmission, only large droplet transmission. I got sick probably by the former way and my illness was terrible though relatively mild (no ICU needed). While I have no diabetes or high blood pressure, having only one of those things puts you in the high risk category. Being elderly is not the only high risk criteria.

I am not a worry wart because if Matthew went on the last A380 of a major airline, that might be worth the risk but not a Delta 777.

I beg to differ. I retired from Delta as a Flight Attendant.

I actually have some unused Delta funny money sitting around, though I’ll have to see if I can make the 31st work. Might be a fun UPGRD reunion…

Still so baffled by why DL can’t make the B777 work for them.

Hah, I love how one of the final flights is numbered 8787. The plane isn’t a 787 nor does Delta have any, how ironic

There’s nothing wrong with the 777, but kind of like the A330, it just doesn’t stir up too much emotion in me.
