A Jet2 flight traveling to Turkey diverted to Austria after a passenger onboard got into a flight with other passengers, the flight crew, and eventually resorted to physical violence and attempted to open the emergency exit door. She now faces a flight ban and so-called “fine” from the airline.
Woman “Fined” By Airline After Diversion Due To Poor Behavior Onboard
The incident occurred on a flight from Manchester (MAN) to Antalya (AYT) on Monday. Catherine Bush was heading to Turkey for a cosmetic dentistry procedure. It isn’t clear if alcohol was involved or what prompted the incident, but witnesses onboard claim Bush became agitated by crying babies around her and the situation got worse when her loud complaints were met by incredulous stares from other passengers.
At one point, she walked to the front of the plane to confront other passengers, got into a row with cabin crew, and eventually tried to open the emergency exit door (impossible in-flight). One passenger noted:
“She was ragging at the door, saying ‘get me off this f***ing plane – let me off now’. It was just so shocking.”
Video has emerged of the incident:

With her behavior increasingly out-of-control, the decision was made to divert to Vienna. There, she was removed from the flight. Just over an hour later, the flight took off again and landed in Antalya about 90 minutes late.
Always fun and games when I’m traveling. Forced to land in Vienna because a passenger got too drunk and turned into Connor Mcgregor ✈️ #jet2 @MENnewsdesk pic.twitter.com/SDAa20DBMV

Jet2 has banned Bush and also issued her a £5,000 fine. It isn’t clear to me on what basis they can bill her for that amount, though I would imagine the diversion at least cost that much. It’s one thing to demand money (heck, I could demand each of you pay me $5,000 to read this story), but quite another to collect it. I would imagine Jet2 will have to take Bush to court to actually collect damages.
Managing Director of Jet2.com Phil Ward explained:
“Ms Bush displayed a continued pattern of appalling behavior on the flight and she must now face up to the consequences of her actions.
“We have always made it abundantly clear that, as a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to such behavior and that we will vigorously pursue any costs incurred as a result of such an incident.
“Although such incidents are very rare, it is unacceptable that our customers and crew should have to experience it. We would like to apologize to anyone who had to experience this behavior and we would like to commend our highly-trained crew for their exceptional handling of this difficult situation.”
The interesting part of this story is that British media has reported, without any further detail, that Bush has been “fined” £5,000 by the Jet2. I’m not sure how the carrier plans to collect that short of going to court, but perhaps the threat of even greater cost will get Bush to pay up.
CONCLUSION
A woman has been fined by Jet2 Airlines for causing a diversion to Vienna after a verbal altercation onboard turned physical. While unlikely to be legally binding, the “fine” represents an interesting way to collect diversion costs.

I also thought of Conor McGregor listening to the video before seeing the 2nd Twitter link. And I’m going to go with drunk as well.
Just nice to see a good old airline passenger issue without masks being the reason. Also again with the damn babies crying!
If, and that’s a big IF, the airline were to include such fines in their “Contract of Carriage”, they could simply bill her. If she failed to pay, the bill could be turned over to collections. She would be forced to defend herself one way or the other. Airlines have tremendous power via the Contract of Carriage and most people don’t read it.
Control your screaming little seat kickers or drive.
Seriously?! Clearly you don’t have children, or have never traveled with them, or have a child who enjoys travel and adventure and rarely throws a fuss. Some are more cautious and nervous and find change harder to handle, right from birth even raised the same as the others. I have raised 5 (now ages 38-15) and have 3 grandsons ages 7 months to 7 years old, and I have some of each type. We’ve traveled a lot around the world, USA to Europe to Asia to New Zealand and back, several times – in planes, trains, and automobiles, as well as bicycles, horses, and on foot in various countries. Children – particularly those under the age of 2 or 3 – tend to cry when they are upset because they cannot speak well enough to convey their issue. Sometimes they just want off and want to be somewhere else. If you think that parents are “allowing” their babies to scream and flail, you are so very sadly mistaken.
Sometimes, babies scream. Even when they aren’t in airplanes with air pressure possibly causing them pain – and no matter WHAT you do, even after making sure the child has a clean diaper, clothes are not twisted or causing an issue, they have eaten, and you are holding them and trying desperately to calm them, the child STILL screams – they do this from birth. It’s normal at times. The parent is doing all they can under the circumstances. Understanding this basic fact and giving your fellow passenger basic understanding that THEY don’t want this behavior, either, would go a long way towards helping calm all involved. I’ve held screaming babies for overwhelmed parents on flights, and general the babies have calmed down (not all, some were more scared of a stranger holding them – age has a bit to do with this) … in part, because I am not feeling the anguish and embarrassment the parents feel at being currently ineffectual in calming and comforting their baby while people around them act like it’s something to be embarrassed about. It’s not. The less judgement the parents get, the quicker the babies will calm down.
Does she have boogers in her nose?
She’s definitely fired up…but can we talk about what she’s wearing?!? It looks like this woman raided Stuart’s wardrobe before the flight.
You’re back!!!
There’s a very easy way in the UK to issue court proceedings for a civil claim which this would be, all on line and you win after 28 days unless the other party can prove you are wrong. It looks like Jet2 has plenty of evidence on their side.
As Jeff P. points out, this is enforceable if stipulated in the Conditions of Carriage. I can’t speak for Jet2 specifically, but I’ve been professionally involved with many rail/bus carriers and they all have such provisions in their T&Cs, as do public transit authorities. In Europe, this is often within an existing legal framework that specifically covers cases of disruptive passengers.
As long as that is the case, the carrier can bill you directly or send the claim to collections.
She should lose some weight before she wears those tight clothes. She is well endowed, she might look nice if she hit the gym and toned up a little.
Fatties, positive body image is fine, but don’t let that be an excuse to not lose weight.
What an asshole comment.
Who the F are you to tell anyone to lose weight?
I know, keeping the gimmick going because we know no one is as big as asshole as you come off on here.
As Dice said…..Here’s to you….sucking my dick.
Relax Dave and take a chill pill…………… She is a little pudgy for the outfit she’s wearing! Hahahaha 😉
“a passenger got too drunk and turned into Connor Mcgregor”
Well that’s my favorite thing I’ve read on the internet today.
I would bet good money that this chavette is a scrounging feral rat of a Scouser!!
They have many previous!!!
Where do I send the check?
She obviously has some mental. Health issues. Maybe this incident will get her some help she desperately needs.
You sure she wasn’t heading there for stomach reduction surgery? She sure needs it…..
Good one JorgeGeorge!! What a dope of a Manchester woman she is………. Gives them all a bad name!
Ban her for life and be done with her………….
I’d rather hear babies crying than a grown woman raging and cussing and throwing a fit. Keep babies on airplanes and keep the morons of the world off.
Do women really think that having a piece of metal in their nose is attractive?
Keep them all off airlines, whether they are crying drunk women, crying women or crying babies. Yes, babies do cry and no they can’t help it. Wait until they are old enough to manage it. We traveled when our kids got older to be respectful of other passengers. That courtesy no longer exists
