First Class: Lufthansa vs. SWISS

Matthew Klint Posted onFebruary 9, 2018November 14, 2023 21 Comments

I’ve recently flown both SWISS and Lufthansa First Class. Which product is better?

Certainly there is subjectivity in what I value and how I compare the two products, but I’d like to think this is not an arbitrary comparison. I will compare SWISS and Lufthansa in ten different categories.

1. Ground Services

In the interest of fairness, I will focus on hubs. In Frankfurt, Lufthansa offers a very personalized check-in experience in the First Class Terminal. Upon arrival at the First Class Terminal, a representative will come out to assist with your baggage and escort you through security. You will be assigned a personal escort and will be driven to your aircraft in a Porsche or Mercedes.

a man standing next to a car

Meanwhile, SWISS offers chauffeur pick-up service in the Zurich area for full-fare passengers, but you are largely on your own in terms of proceeding through security and walking from the lounge to your gate. Upon request, SWISS does offer chauffeur service for all first class passengers in Zurich from the A-Gates to the E-Gates so you don’t have to take the train. SWISS also surprised me when a representative was waiting for my family with our luggage already on carts when we reached LAX. In my experience, Lufthansa does not offer this for first class passengers.

At many outstations like LAX and JFK, on both SWISS and Lufthansa you will be escorted through to the front of security line and to the lounge. Later, you’ll be picked up at the lounge and escorted directly onboard your aircraft.

While SWISS provides a number of nice perks, Lufthansa has the edge due to its more comprehensive ground service.

Verdict: Lufthansa

2. Lounge

Lufthansa’s First Class Terminal in Frankfurt and First Class Lounges in Frankfurt and Munich are exceptional. All feature comfortable seating in a quiet environment. Food is tremendous (both buffet and á la carte) and a huge selection of alcohol is available. Service is excellent and shower and sleeping rooms are available.

a building with a sign on it

The SWISS First Class Lounge near the E-Gates in Zurich is beautiful. Full of natural light and beautiful woodwork, I cannot think of a more beautiful lounge. Delicious food is available from an á la carte menu and a patio provides beautiful views of the tarmac. But the best part of the lounge is a trio of sleeping rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have a long layover extra time before your flight, these rooms are essentially upscale hotel rooms…with the best mattresses in the world.

With an exceptional SWISS culinary experience, comfortable rest rooms, and a beautiful terrace, I’d give a slight edge to the SWISS lounge to Lufthansa’s.

Verdict: SWISS

3. Seating

For the onboard portion, I will compare the flagship products for both carriers. For Lufthansa that is the A380 and for SWISS, the 777-300ER.

The Lufthansa seat is not enclosed, but extremely comfortable in every position. If you are traveling solo, privacy dividers do extend up.

Lufthansa A380 First Class Review

While the SWISS seat is not fully enclosed, the closet door extends to give the feeling of a closed-door suite. The seat itself is identical in size to Lufthansa and has both leather and cloth components. Like Lufthansa, an ottoman provides in-seat storage and a guest seat for shared dining experiences.

a seat in a plane

SWISS wins because of the “doors” on the 777-300ER.

Verdict: SWISS

4. Service

I’ve never had a bad flight on either SWISS or Lufthansa, but have flown Lufthansa First Class much more often than SWISS.

What I love about Lufthansa First is the consistently superior experience. Crews are amazing and combine friendly charm with impeccable professionalism. FAs encourage you to use your FA call button and when you press it, a FA appears within seconds.

a group of women in uniform

SWISS crews are also excellent. I’d say they are little less formal and sometimes therefore friendlier than Lufthansa crews. On my recent flight from ZRH-LAX, charming and excellent as the crew was, the FA call button was ignored and it took a bit longer than it should have to clear away dishes.

SWISS is great, but Lufthansa edges out SWISS thanks to their prompt attention to the FA call button.

Verdict: Lufthansa

5. Food

While Lufthansa is world’s largest buyer of caviar and always makes a good effort at lunch and dinner, I am routinely disappointed by main courses. It seems impossible to ever receive a piece of red meat cooked anything other than well done on Lufthansa. Do yourself a favor and avoid red meat.

Breakfast, however, is always a delight on Lufthansa. Eggs are still cooked to order.

a plate of food with fork and knife

SWISS prides itself in using Swiss ingredients in its onboard first class menu. Unlike the overdone Lufthansa steak I routinely encounter (hopes springs eternal…), the steak I had on SWISS was the best airline steak I’ve ever had and cooked a perfect medium rare. No caviar on SWISS, but you do receive Balik Salmon.

a plate of food on a table

SWISS easily wins this category. If other airlines can offer a nicely cooked steak, so should Lufthansa be able to.

Verdict: SWISS

6. Alcohol

Both Lufthansa and SWISS offer a separate wine menu.

Lufthansa offers a selection of wines from around the world, including rosé, my personal favorite. Hard drinks are available and the champagne selection varies based upon flight and season.

a person holding a bottle of wine

SWISS has a wine list featuring many Swiss wines. A very nice Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle Champagne is offered as well many additional hard liquor items.

a glass of champagne on a table

I’m honestly not a big alcohol guy, but since a glass of rosé is my favorite type of wine and only Lufthansa had it, I’d give the edge to Lufthansa. You can compare the specific wines served by checking the menus in my Lufthansa and SWISS trip reports.

Verict: Lufthansa

7. IFE + Wi-Fi

Lufthansa offers T-Mobile supported wi-fi for a flat fee, 17.99EUR on my last flight. It is slow, but stable and allowed me to stay on top of email and iMessages during the flight.

The IFE selection contains about 50 movies and many TV shows, music, and games.

a screenshot of a website

In terms of IFE, SWISS and Lufthansa are a draw. SWISS also offers about 50 movies as well as games, music, and TV shows. SWISS also offers wi-fi access onboard, but it is very costly. First Class passengers are given a free 50MB voucher, which lasts only a few minutes. Want more? You will pay dearly for it.

Verdict: Lufthansa

8. Amenity Kits

Lufthansa offers a Rimowa-branded amenity kit (though sometimes you find inferior substitutes) with a collectible hard shell case that you can sell on eBay for sometimes in excess of $100 (or keep on your desk, like I do). Contents are fairly basic and include a comb, socks, shoehorn, ear plugs, toothbrush, toothpaste, and la prairie lotions.

a suitcase and two roses on a table

SWISS offers a more simple bag that also includes pricey la prairie lotions, Ricola lozenges, a wooden comb, tissue, earplugs, socks, eyeshades, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

a group of items on a table

While the contents are about a draw, I love the Rimowa case so Lufthansa wins.

Verdict: Lufthansa

9. Pajamas

Both carriers offers pajamas and slippers.

Lufthansa offers pajamas from van Laack, which are soft and somewhat silky.

a group of grey bags on a table

SWISS offers pajamas from zimmerli, which are similar in style and fabric.

a white and black shirt on a table

I actually prefer the pajamas on United, British Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, and JAL better than either SWISS or Lufthansa.

Verdict: Draw

10. Lavatories

Onboard the Lufthansa A380, two huge lavatories are available on either side of the staircase leading to the lower deck. Here you have plenty of room to move around. The Lufthansa freshly-cut rose is always a mark of quality and full-size la prairie lotions are available.

Lufthansa First Class A380 vs 747-8

The lavatory aboard the SWISS flagship 777-300ER is roomy, but only about 1/3 the size of the Lufthansa A380. It also features la prairie lotions.

a toilet and sink in a bathroom

Verdict: Lufthansa

Final Verdict: Lufthansa Edges Out SWISS

This is by no means a knock on SWISS, but Lufthansa outshines its step-brother (both carriers are owned by the Lufthansa Group). All else equal, I’d choose Lufthansa every time…even while I would not hesitate to fly SWISS again at a moment’s notice.

The funny thing is that Swiss was much worse five years ago. It will be interesting to see if they can improve that even more, and outdo Lufthansa in five years. Maybe you can do this comparison every couple of years to see? These products keep changing. I’d also really like to see a comparison between the Emirates, Air France 777-300er, and Singapore new first classes if you get a chance to fly all three?

Hi Alan, I will soon publish an Emirates review (not exactly recent, though) and hope to fly both the AF 777-300ER and Singapore first class later this year.

Personally, I’d rank Lufthansa First, then Garuda, then JAL, then Singapore, then SWISS as my top five first class products. But I need to try Air France.

I’d say that is #6. He was still the best onboard chef I’ve ever had, by miles.

Having flown all those bar Garuda, I’ll be stunned if AF doesn’t top your list, assuming you’re flying the 777. LH was always my all round favourite, but AF just absolutely killed it.

How were the flight attendants with your son? My wife flew Lufthansa first class ord to Rome and then return on united first a year ago. She said the United attendants were actually a little more helpful than lh although both pretty good.

Nice comparison! Flew into DFW on Lufthansa and they had gathered our Luggage with an escort. Wouldn’t accept a tip either.

My concierge accepted a tip at LAX, but it was the same guy I deal with every time I fly LH F, so we sort of know each other.

Would have loved a comparison on each carrier’s history of honoring ticketed F awards.

That’s easy. Lufthansa does. SWISS does when it feel like it.

This makes me a feel a little about about Aeroplan canceling my ticket… but I’d still like to try it at least once.

Also, in IAD LH has an attendant who gathers your luggage. in JFK they do not.

Nice comparison. Few things (as someone who flies LH or LX F most months):

    – LH definitely do have the same luggage service at LAX
    – 2 sleeping rooms rather than 3 in the LX F lounge in the E dock
    – In March LX will open their new A dock F lounge with private security and entrance at ZRH.. this should vastly improve ground services
    – Generally I find LX outstation PA service a bit more comprehensive than LH’s
    – I think an important thing to compare would be transit services. Transit in FRA is beyond dreadful, especially when arriving from an F flight as you’re always at a gate position. ZRH can still be a schlep but nowhere near as bad. MUC is generally the best of the bunch but until the summer schedule won’t have the A380. Once the A380 is flying from MUC at the end of March then LH will definitely have the edge on those routes (including LAX)

Thanks for your valuable input! I almost always originate in Frankfurt and don’t have to deal with the transfer experience there.

I know this is pretty late but I have to agree that FRA is very different in originating vs connecting. It’s remarkable when originating in FRA but connecting can be a disaster. MUC and ZRH are much easier to navigate with ZRH offering more consistent arrival and transit support for F/HON passengers. I actively avoid landing or connecting in Frankfurt.

I agree with the classification, except on 6. Wine that you gave to Lufthansa. Lufthansa’s first class wine list is best described by “let’s try to find sth really cheap and sell it somehow and hope nobody notices that our wine isn’t that grat”, while SWISS regularly plays on quality. Take as example the Cos d’Estournel 2008 that was offered on your flight (the 2005 was on the list 2-3 years ago, the 2008 is back since 6 months), which outstands the whole Lufthansa list by far

Hey Matthew, great blog, I have been lurking and now have a question:
You mention in this article that LX offers chauffeur pick-up service in Zurich for full-fare passengers, I have not been able to find any info on this on their website. When doing a google search, the country specific pages for UK, Scandinavian and Baltic countries mention this service, but thats about all. How did you book yours? Checking flyertalk, there isn’t any clear info either. Everyone else had the same observations: the pages for the chauffeur service in those countries mentioned above only show up on google, there is no way to arrive at that page if you start at the homepage of the LX website. (why so mysterious?!)
I have an upcoming flight via ZRH arriving in GVA in A class, would like to book the chauffeur service to go home after landing in GVA.
