My Unorthodox Free Suite Upgrade at Hilton

Matthew Klint Posted onApril 2, 2017April 2, 2017 6 Comments

We’ve all heard of hotel upgrades due to overcrowding or loyalty status, but yesterday’s upgrade was a first.

My wife and I checked into the Hilton Munich Airport yesterday evening with little Augustine. We had reserved a standard room. With an excited look on her face, the check-in agent stated, “I’m pleased to inform you that we have upgraded you to one of our brand new deluxe rooms that was renovated only three weeks ago! Will that be okay?”

Yes, that will be fine, thank you.

The new rooms, by the way, look great–

Very modern, yet very not so minimalist as to lack functionality.

Anyway, we asked if a crib could be delivered to the room. A worried look spread across on her face and she stated, “Hmm, due to fire regulations we cannot put a crib in your room. Would it be okay to upgrade you to a junior suite?”

Yes, that would be okay!

So we ended up with a complimentary junior suite upgrade due to “fire regulations”. Put another way, if you want a suite upgrade you should bring along a baby…

I do have Gold status in Hilton thanks to my American Express Platinum card, but this certainly was not a status-based upgrade. In fact, I received an email inviting me to upgrade to the junior suite for 90EUR.

It was nice to have a living room for Augustine to sleep in.

CONCLUSION

While I do not expect this work at every hotel, it was a pleasant and appreciated surprise. I guess I have German fire code regulations to thank…

I’m going to MUC next month. Wasn’t planning on bringing the toddler but now I’m rethinking. Having a suite, especially since I’ll now be sharing a room with a toddler, would be great!

    Sweet, good for you guys.

Curious, what’s behind Augustine’s name; it’s a cool name? Family name? Gonna call him Auggie or August? as a nickname?

I had this happen to me in Berlin. Was traveling with my wife and 2 young children. They upgraded us to a suite (which was huge) because the fire regulations didn’t allow for a second child to be there (even though the booking was ‘legal’. Great upgrade. Btw, it was a courtyard Marriott in Berlin.

That sure is an interesting story. I haven’t yet received a true upgrade at a Hilton Hotel even though I am a Diamond Member. Did you receive any other amenities at the hotel? I heard sometimes if you have a baby with you, they might bring a small care package with diapers, wipes, etc.
