How United Airlines Honored George H.W. Bush

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 7, 2018November 14, 2023 5 Comments

In my final post on the life of George H.W. Bush, I want to highlight how United Airlines honored the late president at the airport he’s named after.

For the last two days, gate C41 at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston has been closed to flights, instead serving as a memorial to America’s 41st President:

The gate’s destination board reads simply, “In Memory of George H.W. Bush”.

Meanwhile, a placard reads:

The United family pays tribute to the life and legacy of President George H.W. Bush, a granite American figure whose mark will forever be carved in our country’s history.

As the namesake of our hub airport at Houston, President Bush became synonymous with the city he loved through his advocacy for the people and communities of Houston – and for that, and much more, the United family will always be grateful to him.

A fitting tribute.

Several hundred feet away is a permanent display…this was at George Bush Intercontinental Airport after all. But several flower bouquets and a large arrangement were left beside the statue. Someone even left a pair of socks, reminiscent of President’s Bush’s penchant for bright-colored socks.

If you have some time next time you are flying out of Houston, check out the permeant display, which tells the story of Bush’s life of public service.

CONCLUSION

Turning Gate 41 into a makeshift memorial was a classy move on the part of United.

I came through there last Saturday the 8th (my first trip to IAH) and they had moved the photos, flowers, and United tribute sign over to the statue. I had to stop and shoot photos.
