Government Tells Airline to Change Name After Crash

Matthew Klint Posted onSeptember 1, 2010 3 Comments

That’s one way to reset your safety record…

After a deadly crash that killed 42 and injured 54, the Henan provincial government in eastern central China has told their namesake airline, Henan Airlines, to change its name. The EMB-190 crashed last Tuesday night for unknown reasons (though some passengers claim the aircraft missed the runway) and government officials are fuming at the adverse effects the crash might have on tourism in Henan.

Henan Airlines was granted permission to use Henan in their name after moving their headquarters to Henan last year. It looks like Henan will be going back to their old name, Kunpeng Airlines.

As an aside, Henan Airlines is a joint venture between Shenzhen Airlines and (drum roll please…) Mesa Air Group, America’s most beloved regional carrier.

Valujet was bought by tiny Airtran and took the smaller carrier’s name after the former carrier’s famous accident..
