Great Dane: A New Danish Airline

Great Dane Airlines, a new Danish airline, plans to makes it debut this summer. But will the airline be dogged by intense competition and banished to the doghouse?

The carrier will be based out of Aalborg, Denmark’s fourth-largest city and located about 250 miles northwest of Copenhagen. Its airport (AAL) hosts limited scheduled service including:

  • KLM – Amsterdam
  • Norwegian – Copenhagen, Malaga
  • Ryanair – London
  • SAS – Copenhagen, Oslo
  • Vueling – Barcelona

Several charter flights also serve AAL.

Great Dane Airlines intends to fill some of that void with scheduled Embraer E195 service to:

  • Dublin
  • Edinburgh
  • Nice

If those routes do well, the airline will expand to more destinations within Europe. The carrier hopes to eventually serve Billund and Copenhagen as well and offer charter and scheduled services to destinations like:

  • Crete
  • Mallorca
  • Rhodes
  • Varna

There’s not much to the website now, which is only available in Danish and states:

That translates into:

Tickets sales are set to begin on March 01, 2019.

CONCLUSION

If you’re up for it, there is an interesting article (in Danish) on the airline’s eccentric founder, a pilot and father of six, here. That’s a separate story, though.

I’m taking a “I have to see it to believe it” approach for Great Dane Airlines. But it does sound like the airline can fill a unique niche.

No, but you should for writing that.

With a name like that, I half expected an airline aimed at dog lovers, where large breeds can fly in the cabin for free.

I lived in Aalborg for 8 years. I have a hard time believe they’ll make it long term. People in that area are notorious penny pushers. Charter flights might be ok if they can compete on price so people do not have to get to Copenhagen or Billund, but regular routes to other cities? I don’t see it, but best of luck to them.

      Penny pinchers….not pushers

I think the name is clever, but the choice of destinations isn’t.

Am I the only one here who thinks that the livery is too similar to Qantas’?
