I’ve been “off the grid” for a while and this post is not to apologize for my lack of recent posting. Augustine is fussy like I am and a light-sleeper like my wife is: the combination has been lethal thus far! Three weeks into this new life and I am loving it, but my goodness it is tougher than I imagined. Keeping Award Expert running has been difficult enough…
But something else is going on. Something exciting. Fundamental changes are in store for this blog and unlike loyalty program devaluations spun as “enhancements” these changes you actually are going to like. I promise.
There has been so many issues I have wanted to discuss over the last several weeks but consciously chose not to — it will all make sense soon. I still could not help writing about United’s recent MileagePlus changes, but most of the news and analysis I would usually cover I have left on the table.
People complain that “the blogs” just regurgitate information they steal from each other or other sources online. I strongly disagree with that overall assessment, though it is certainly true in some cases. The need for another blogger to analyze the same story is not necessarily useless — it all depends on the level and quality of the analysis — but for many years it has struck me that while there are many miles/points blogs and many destination travel blogs, there are very few blogs that discuss life from the viewpoint of a traveler.
Kyle (Trip Sherpa) and I decided we would try to remedy that through a new writing project called Pen and Passport. We are still getting the site set up and looking classy, but have launched with a series of stories that I hope you will find thought-provoking. Here are my first five contributions:
Humiliation, a Cultural Learning Tool
Travel from a Luxury Hotel Room and Airline Lounge?
The Hyatt Gold Passport Changes
But Pen and Passport will not just be about those long form musings that take time to write and thus are impossible to churn out each day — there will be news as well and you’ll certainly want to check out a story I just published on huge changes coming to Hyatt’s Gold Passport program.

IN CONCLUSION
Pen and Passport will not replace Live and Let’s Fly — by and large my contributions to P&P will be the sort of writings that are either too controversial or too tangential to travel to be featured on a blog that focuses on miles, points, and trip reports.
The future is bright — stay tuned for what is next.
Not to worry, life with a baby does get better. Eventually. Sort of. 🙂
Looking forward to checking out the new blog.
When I first read this article I thought you were spinning the Hyatt GP changes as something you liked. But on second reading i see it’s the blog changes
