Review: Iberia’s Impressive Velázquez Lounge in Madrid

Matthew Klint Posted onJune 20, 2017November 14, 2023 2 Comments

The Iberia Velázquez Business Class lounge in Madrid offers something for everyone. While not quite of first class caliber, it provides many amenities that go above and beyond your typical European business class lounge.

The 24/7 lounge is located in Terminal 4S. After security, walk through the duty free shop where you will find glass sliding doors into the lounge.

Access is granted for business class passengers on Iberia or oneworld partners as well as oneworld passengers holding emerald or sapphire status.

Iberia Madrid Velázquez Business Class Lounge Sleeping Room

I spent a night in the lounge during my crazy trip home from Bangkok, so let’s start with that.

The room contains nine beds and is always kept dark. I had the room to myself overnight. In what I considered to be a very nice touch, a lounge agent brought in a pillow and blanket for me. I slept quite well.

I wrote about the experience in greater detail here.

I’m not sure why Iberia keeps the lounge open overnight since there is about a 7hr gap without flights. The lounge was 100% empty, though I was happy to have it to myself:

Buffet

During the overnight, there is not much food, but a full selection of drinks is available:

a row of glasses and bottles on a counter

a bowl of cereal and a spoon on a table

a bar with bottles of drinks

Despite the posted hours, the snacks in the refrigerator were left out all night:

The Spanish eat late: look at the posted hours for the buffet–

That cracks me up, really–the eating hours are so foreign to my 6am/12pm/6pm schedule. I didn’t eat much while in the lounge, but had a bit of dinner (great lasagna) and a bit of breakfast (plain omelet).

Wine Bar

How many lounges have a wine bar? Iberia has a wide variety of Spanish (+ non-Spanish) wines you can sample and then drink to your heart’s content.

A La Carte Restaurant

The lounge also boasts and a la carte restaurant open for dinner each night. You can see the menu below. The restaurant is on the opposite side as the wine bar and is perhaps the most tranquil part of the lounge with the best tarmac views. It also has the lounge’s best coffee machine…

Coffee

There are coffee machines strategically placed around the lounge, but the coffee itself is quite unremarkable.

I awoke early in the morning and the lounge was still mostly empty. It’s really quite beautiful as the sunrise streams in. But be warned: at its peak (just before noon) nearly every seat was filled.

Showers are available near the wine bar. Pick up a key from the front desk. I took a shower during the lounge’s busy period but still did not need to wait. WARNING: my sink leaked. Big time. Literally, the water ran directly from the basin to the floor. I did not notice it immediately and soon found myself standing in a puddle of water. Needless to say, I shaved in the shower instead. Avoid shower stall #4!

CONCLUSION

You can see that this is not just another oversized hub lounge, but has some unique and attractive features. I was quite pleased with my (extended) stay in Iberia’s Velázquez Lounge.

Great photo essay of the main lounge at Barajas airport. Next time try the tortilla espanola sandwich. The UHT milk may be affecting the flavor of the coffee. It is a luxury to have fresh milk. At least no female insisted in sleeping in her Eve-ning suit while you were in Morpheus arms.

    I had shower room #5.
The grout was cracking between tiles and the rocky feature wall was covered in black mould. Needless to say the room stank of mildew.

    I showered in Lisbon instead.
