Over the years, I’ve raved about the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu, my favorite hotel on the island of Oahu. Today, I’m sad to report about a shooting and suicide that occurred at the hotel over the weekend.
Terror at Kahala Hotel As Gunman Barricades Himself In Room
On Saturday evening, the Honolulu Police Department received a 911 call from the Kahala. Shots had been fired on the fourth floor. A sailor from the U.S. Navy had barricaded himself in the room and fired shots at the door as a hotel security guard knocked. Thankfully, the security guard was not injured.
Honolulu PD arrived at the scene and began evacuating fourth floor guests to the lobby:
I’m in the lobby of @KahalaResort in Honolulu for the past 30min and there’s been reports of a mentally ill person w a gun.
We are thankfully fine but feeing such sadness that we’re experiencing this fear only a month after Colorado and Georgia. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/0bq7E9n0M5

Police negotiators went to work. The man claimed he was alone in the room. A 10-hour standoff ensued. Another gunshot was fired. Police entered the room at 3:30am and found the man dead from a self-inflicted gun wound.
The Navy has confirmed the death:
We can confirm that a Sailor assigned to the Pacific Submarine Force is deceased.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of a shipmate. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Sailor’s family and friends.
Each member of our Navy team is important; this is a tragic loss to our Force and Navy Family. We live and work here, and we appreciate the support of law enforcement and the community.
The Kahala issued the following statement:
We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night on our property, and we are focused on supporting our guests and employees at this time. We thank the law enforcement officers who responded quickly to ensure everyone’s safety. We are working with the Honolulu Police Department as they conduct their investigation and ask that questions about this incident be addressed to HPD.
What a sad story…
CONCLUSION
If you’re feeling depressed or that life isn’t worth living, help is available and suicide is not the answer. Please consider reaching out to a loved one and/or calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Very sad. Clearly he wasn’t right in the head.
I wish we could take better care of our servicemen/women and veterans.
The headline is a bit exaggerated. I thought it was going to be an article about draconian enforcement of flu restrictions.
Soldiers/Marines/Sailors disproportionately suffer from mental illness. It is because the military selects the worst people who will blindly follow orders (enforce leftist laws and carry out leftist orders) or because many in service feel shame about past wars and the uselessness of a standing army who will only be used to suppress freedom and never actually defend borders from invaders: I don’t know. Maybe it is a combination. If we look at cops who are known to commit grave abuses, we’ll find many served in the military. There’s no honor in any institutions anymore. Serving in the military is no longer the honorable thing to do. The Middle East wars have been a disaster. The military is even worse than Boeing at programs from the DDG to the V22 to the F35 to the sidearms issued by the army. It’s a huge waste of money. Cut funding in half and the military would still be 5x as funded as the next big one.
Cops and soldiers/Marines/Sailors are known to commit a disproportionate amount of violence. Think about it: these people are in positions of power and are trained by the government to use firearms. These are the most dangerous people who have them. Scary. The Navy are the only ones who actually protect us (Aegis destroyers and the deterrence of subs). Still, the government always gets the worst people.
@Jackson – congrats on not going full white nationalist / racist for a change in your latest post!
Oh the military, that bastion of liberalism, known historically for supporting Dem candidates…GTFOH
@UA-TDS
You fail to understand that true conservatism eschews interventionism and using military force to impose American ideals on other countries. American globalism is a flaw of both neoliberals and neoconservatives.
@cargocult the incel – stay Proud, Boy coming to the rescue and supporting a white nationalist!
Oh, and your lofty proclamation has no basis in reality. Conservatives being the true pacifists? Nice try.
