Lost Baggage on MegaBus

Matthew Klint Posted onSeptember 3, 2012December 9, 2016 73 Comments

You know that sinking feeling you get when you are waiting at the baggage carrousel for your bag, the same bags are going around over and over, and no new bags are coming off the belt? Been there. Last night, though, was even worse—as I stepped off my MegaBus bus in New York City, all the luggage had been unloaded and was sitting on the curb of 7th Avenue and 28th St in Manhattan. There was one bag left. And it wasn’t mine.

It looked similar, though by no means identical. It was a black roller bag, a bit bulkier than mine, with no sort of identification on it. I waited a few minutes, hoping that someone had grabbed my bag instead of this one by mistake and would bring it right back. I had a sinking feeling that a clever thief was hanging out at the bus stop and had casually grabbed my bag—there is no sort of luggage tag or claim check when you place bags in the underbelly of a MegaBus bus.

But no one showed up. I opened the bag, hoping there would be some sort of identification inside. Nothing. I told the driver and the guy unloading bags what had happened and though apologetic, they said nothing could be done and I was given a local Elizabeth, NJ telephone number that was supposed to be MegaBus customer service.

I asked to keep the bag, hoping that the person who had my bag would find a way to get in contact with me, but the driver said he needed to take it to the MegaBus office on 34th Street for safekeeping. The bus pulled away, but I waited around another 15 minutes—hoping that someone would return with a bag. No one showed.

In the meantime, I called MegaBus customer service where (after a lengthy hold) I spoke to a woman who stated that no one had turned anything in and that if I wanted to, I could file a claim online. If I wanted to?! She took down my name and telephone number and promised to call if someone turned my bag in. I told her to look for a black bag with a silver United Airlines luggage tag bearing my name.

I met up with Mike and while I was completing an emergency award booking for a client prior to dinner, an e-mail popped in via upgrd.com. A woman in Brooklyn had my bag!

She wanted to know whether I had her bag and Mike and I concluded the best course of action would be to get her to agree to take my bag to me before telling her how she could reclaim her bag. She agreed to take the bag to me and I told her that her own bag was safe and sound in the MegaBus NYC office and I would provide her with a telephone number and contact person upon delivery of the bag.

Twenty minutes later I was re-united with my bag. Mike and I were sitting in The Red Cat on 227 10th St when the lady appeared at the hostess desk with my bag. The exchange may have looked suspicious, but I had my bag back and all the contents inside (admittedly, I did not verify this until later, as the woman looked quite trusting). She profusely apologized for the mix-up and I gave her the customer service number and told her to head to 34th Street.

The bag was full of clothes and a few personal articles, which could have been replaced, but dealing with an insurance claim in correlation with my Chase Sapphire Card just did not seem appealing, especially when I am off to Hawaii for the weekend.

My story is heartening.  Mistakes happen and though I assumed the worst, it turned out to be an honest mistake that was quickly remedied. This story also shows that any pretense of privacy I had is gone…the woman did not open the bag (where she could have found more personal information). She just looked at my United 1K luggage tag, googled my name, and reached me by e-mail seconds later.  Next time I use MegaBus—if there is a next time—I will place my RFD tag on my checked bag…

i’m gathering individuals who have lost luggage riding with megabus for a class action settlement. if you are interested please email me magazine1776@gmail.com
Their policy is unfortunate for those who have lost luggage. It’s sort of insulting. I have an attorney who will take on a class action. If you’re interested in being included please message me.

At this moment Sunday, I am hoping to be reunited with my bag with 2 cameras and lens that I left on the bus Thursday. The driver told the dispatcher he picked it up but since then I get the run around just trying to get someone to tell me “your bag is exactly here, pick it up from such and such an address.
At this point I feel totally at the mercy of certain non caring staff in Megabus customer service. I feel like I have been playing ping pong as each customer service pass the responsibility to the next customer service number and so I have been going round and round and round.
I received an auto response to my email which basically states that it would take 5 days before anyone begins to look at my request for help.

Why can’t some one look in luggage and identify who they belong to.
Do mega bus co. Care, that people are losing their , belonging they need.
My son went to San Antonio tx. With all his clothing,,someone took his luggage, left theirs , so where is the one luggage. the driver kept, it should not have been that hard. He spend his time in s a tx with no clothes at al and miss the funeral he went there to attend .

On Friday, June 7, 2017 my son freshmen in college traveled on a Megabus from Dallas Texas to Houston Texas. The Two workers who walked the passengers outside to load luggage, told him that he could not take his 20 inch bag on the bus because it would not fit in the compartment sonIntold him to ask for a name tag for his baggage They told him tag was not needed it would be fine, (My son had me on the phone listening to everything) even thou the bus wasn’t full and he sat by himself? He had a lock on the bag he watch them load his luggage in the baggage compartment of the bus, proceeded to load the bus four hours later he got off the bus in Houston only to find his luggage was the only piece of luggage that could not be found. It was reported it to the two gentlemen and the bus driver at the Downtown Houston location on Pierce St. His bag was the only only one missing. And we were told the workers( Jake Garcia & Jaime Cortinas) who unloads the buses in Houston they don’t handle that. We spent an additional hour there praying someone returned his bag. While waiting we called to make a report with HPD info taken by Raven with HPD. We got out again I asked if cameras could be viewed for possible clues to see it being unloaded off the bus and their response was well it probably wouldn’t matter because another bus was parked it front of the one he was on and probably blocked the view of the camera, we don’t view it here all film is sent to corporate in San Antonio so you have to contact them to ask?? So, I had to inquire about what to do next and only then was I given a number for customer service who were surprisingly rude and uncaring . They supposedly document all items that were missing in his bag and said they will contact us back later that evening with updates if the luggage was found and if not it will take up to five days for lost and found to contact us . Customer transferred me to Headquarters in San Antonio? I spoke to someone who would not give me their name who claimed to be a supervisor and was really rude? Later said his name was “Prienci” but refused to give me a last name. Never apologetic & He wouldn’t answer any questions about whether they could view tape from cameras To help find my son’s luggage? He only kept repeating “wait until lost and found contacts us” and hung up on me. We heard nothing until Sunday, June 9, 2017, we received an email from lost and found stating that the luggage had not been found and they were sorry and if we had any more questions or comments they should be sent via email ? My son rode the bus back on Sunday July 9th leaving Houston at 5:20 & arriving at Dallas downtown location at 9:50 pm due to a wheather delay and inquired with a worker about whether if his luggage had been later taken off and left behind only to be told if it was it would be at the Grand Prairie location where all missing luggage is kept because they don’t keep anything at the downtown location??? On Monday I had my mom to go to the Grand Prairie Texas location to see if the bag was there only to be told we had been
misinformed by the downtown location because they only handle missing baggage for Grand Prairie only, which makes sense. The Megabus system stinks something it going on and it appears and they are getting away with it. Please include me in the suit this was a loss of lover $1,200. Thanks

I left my keys on the bus from Chicago to Detroit this week and no one at mega bus will help me. They told me my only option is to email and wait up to a week with the holiday. My car is old and it is my only key. Mega bus customer service is not the best. A few drivers were awesome, but I’ve had some that yell and throw luggage and complain about getting behind when it isn’t the customers fault the weather and traffic was bad!

I can’t even describe the ordeal of buying to seats for 2 piece of luggage, 1 carry on and a backpack with a laptop and other valuables inside, the driver pulled away as she was being summoned to turn around and return my luggage since I was un boarded due to the weight of my other luggage. The driver refused to comply as I watched her speed away with my 2 pieces of luggage from Chicago to Minneapolis. You guys know the rest of the story NASTY Lostandfound customer services “I can’t do anything I’m in NJ and your luggage is missing in Minneapolis.” I’m thinking on calling the Media on this company, lawyer, class action. @Marie, I am with you. We are contacting the BBB and a reporter at the ny times who tries to investigate situations where the consumer is wronged. Even if someday we get our bag back, the way their service dept operates is absurd and something needs to be done. If you or anyone wants to contact me personally tweet me @stovocore or email me at sbparke (I use gmail).

Basically the same situation as the original article described just happened to me and my fiancé on April 4th from Cleveland to Chicago. Basically some lady walked off with our bag which looked similar to hers. How do we know? Bc when all the passengers left only one bag was left unaccounted for and it looked similar to ours, but it wasn’t. We notified our driver and have the bag to her. We are still fighting with megabus to get our bag back or at least to get some straight answers. They are impossible to get anywhere with and have zero interest in making any effort to make the situation right. It took us almost a week before lost & found would contact us. According to customer service, you don’t call lost & found, they call you! Of course when lost & found finally did call we missed their call and spent almost 2 weeks trying to get back in touch with them bc they do not return messages or answer their phones. We finally got in touch and now they can’t give us a straight answer about our bags whereabouts. They’ve been in touch with the person who accidentally took our bag but they can’t tell us whether they turned it in our not!? I could go on and on bc I’m leaving out quite a few details that make the situation even more absurd, but the point is we want megabus to be responsive and make some sort of effort to make the situation right. The most frustrating part is they have the power to settle this but won’t!

Well I didn’t leave my bag on the bus. It was loaded in Chicago to Columbus, Oh. and when we got to Columbus, my bag was not in the bag department. This means that Mega Bus employee had to give my bag to someone, as we can’t go inside the baggage area. I had gone to Chicago solely for the purpose of shopping and had everything that my hard, earned money bought, be just given away. My bag included new clothes and shoes, jewelry, belts, sunglasses, house and car keys. This bag had a lot of value and they are telling me they are not responsible. Anyone with any advise on what actions I can take please email. tlwilliams419@yahoo.com I am willing to take this as far as I need to. News, Poster Boards, Emails, A Facebook Page, etc…They have to be held responsible.

Lost my red colored small carry on once arriving Chicago from Atlanta at 5am on 8/11/15. Noticed the one I had was a man’s with a prescription in it. Called customer service to no avail. Like others they say lost and found will be in touch in 5 days by email or phone. I returned the other person’s red carry on. If you have mine it has various clothes, blue tennis shoes, sweats, a carton of cheap smokes but most importantly my prescriptions are in that red carry on and i cannot replace them with my insurace and need them ASAP. There is an id tag with my name, phone , address and email. Please contact me with any info and if you accidently grabbed mine and me yours, please do as I did for you and return it to megabus to be sent to the lost and found depot in Chicago. Thanks much, Call or email: 312-607-3372

Same nonsensical thing happened to me, except I was also placed on the wrong bus bc the driver did not see that my ticket said Baltimore to Hampton instead of Baltimore to Philly. So im stuck in philly for an hour when i NEED to get to my college by the end of the day, and the driver unloads ALL of thw luggage, including my large purple suitcase with all my clothes in it, toiletries, a designer bag i just got for christmas, and most importantly my laptop which i need for school. Theres no identification on the bag bc my mom had bought it the day bfore i left (1/7/16) but if you open the top little pocket of it there should be like six cans of spray on deoderant, and a hair bonnet. Im so mad bc megabus keeps giving my mom and i the runaround and are saying that they can only give me $250 back when the stuff in that bag was worth over $2000! Im in college, i NEED clothes and i NEED a laptop. If anyone has any info on the suitcase or how to get megabus to compensate for not only placing me on the wrong bus but also taking off my luggage, contact me at tgirl11@live.com or 443-939-7597.

I lost my bag on the Magabus in February 2016, They didn’t make a effort to find the bag Nothing was found, The bag was silver and black spotted, Amelia Earhart cosmetic bag, the contents were all my medications, a expensive watch and a pink expensive necklace, pearl earrings, assorted earrings a silver and turquoise ring from Israel and girl scout cookies and other small items. They made a search in New Jersey, but could not find the bag. I made a Police report and the officer said you might as well forget about that bag. Someone took it.

Megabus lost my luggage while travelling from chicago to minneapolis. I am an international student here. They lost my big checkin bag weighing around 50 lbs. It had all my clothes, medicines, perfumes, footwear and laptop chargers. It is really difficult for an international student to survive without our stuff in another country. All the stuff was worth $2000. I dont know how much i am allowed to claim and how much will they reimburse!!!! If anyone can help please email me on harshpatel971@gmail.com
