Flying Lufthansa First Class affords you many privileges onboard, but does not bestow you the right to smoke pot in the spacious onboard lavatory. One passenger learned the hard way.
Dumb: Man Smokes Pot In Lufthansa First Class
My friend was flying Lufthansa First Class recently and conveyed this story to me. He’s my age and most of the time the other passengers in first class tend to be older. This time, however, he met a group of young people in the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt and they ended up sharing a van to the aircraft.
The flight began well. Great service onboard provided by a pair of lovely and attentive flight attendants. But then one of the passengers decided it was a good idea to going the lavatory to smoke marijuana.
The lavatories are spacious onboard…but marijuana has such a strong (and grotesque) odor, it is difficult to conceal. Even though the smoke alarm was not triggered, when the man stepped out of the lavatory it was very clear what he had just done.
And while first class gets you the red carpet treatment in so many ways (private car to the aircraft, spacious seat, Champagne and caviar, multi-course meal, slippers and pajamas, etc), it does not give you license to smoke onboard.
My hunch is the guy was already intoxicated from alcohol or other drugs and perhaps didn’t even know what he was doing, but intoxication is no excuse: the captain reported the incident and Los Angeles Airport Police were waiting at the gate when the 747-8 pulled into the Tom Bradley International Terminal.
The young man was led off the aircraft while other passengers were asked to remain seated onboard. It isn’t clear what happened to the passenger, a German visiting the United States.
CONCLUSION
A simple but important lesson: don’t smoke on an airplane. Even in first class, it just doesn’t fly.
Ha! I always thought all the gummy bears at the FCT looked like eatables 😉
That would have been a better high. So to speak
This does give me a chance to ask, “What’s the best thing about being high?”
The view! 🙂
Enjoy
Damn hippies. Haven’t they heard of edibles?
I was thinking a vape pen could also have met the need without generating any actual smoke or alerting everyone on board to what he’d done.
You are a problem solver Mark, which the world needs more of.
I would use the classic quote from Walter in The Big Lebowski but I try to avoid using swear words here.
“and perhaps didn’t even know what he was doing”
I think if this were the case he wouldn’t have gone into the bathroom. An attempt to conceal suggests a certain level of awareness…
Fair point.
Looks like a lifetime of expensive US embassy/consulate visits to apply for visas, if they can be approved at all.
I wish I could share with you my recent experience of an entire floor at a Hyatt reeking of Marijuana for 2 consecutive days.
You’re free to share with me. That would be grounds for checking out and disputing the charge, IMO.
Then everyone should be getting free rooms in Vegas. Every casino hotel reeks of weed, that regardless of it being legal, is illegal in public places like hotels. Obviously doesn’t stop the clowns from smoking it. Reading reviews of casino hotels show it’s a constant complaint. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to write about if what you claim is true.
Drinkers are far, far worse in Las Vegas & on planes.
He will pay a fine and he will get to do it again. Remember if you are rich you should not worry about laws. And i comptently agree with this. Fine him tens of thousands and use that money for social causes.
Like that prince who raped a 17 year old girl, settled and is now fine. Moral of the story, rape is ok if you are rich enough to pay for it.
Fines in the US need to be tied to net worth like in Finland. Fine the rich fu$ks til it hurts them for the same crime. Incarceration ends up being a waste and a cost to the society.
I like the last point, but you sure have a severe case of wealth envy!
Because wealth has been protected through legalized bribing to write laws that favor one constituency over another.
Court ordered fines in Switzerland are tied to income (or net worth if that would be more). So for excessive speeding one person might pay $2,000, another $20,000.
There’s a good chance he will also be banned from flying with Lufthansa.
There’s quite a difference between smoking pot, which is arguably a (near) victimless crime, and rape.
Stories like this are why I vote against marijuana legalization every chance I get. I honestly don’t think it’s a harmful drug at all, and I don’t see any reason to make it illegal, but as soon as it’s made legal, people start smoking it everywhere. Literally every public space in California reeks of pot and you can’t get away from it. The same hotels, bars and restaurants that so rigorously enforce rules against tobacco use seem completely incapable of applying those same rules against pot smoking. I don’t get it, and it’s why I no longer support legalization.
Smoking should still be banned on planes and public transport.
Drinkers are far, far worse in Las Vegas & on planes.
Ok turd… really good reason ya idiot
I assume it would be a civil or maybe a trespass issue? What would LAPD arrest them for?
Ok square explain to us how you get multiple chances to “vote against marijuana legalization every chance [you] get”
As to why police would be involved, for one thing it’s illegal to smoke on an airplane. Also illegal to bring marijuana into the US, so they may have probable cause to search based on the reported odor.
More distressing is that the smoke alarm didn’t go off.
Wow.. you get paid to write these high school news articles..wtf.
Thanks for your click.
Thank you for the article Matthew Klint.
Wow, you write these high school comments…… for free. Who’s an idiot???
Wow can you imagine how boring Matthew Klint’s life must be that he write blog posts chastising strangers he doesn’t know for enjoying a puff of smoke onboard a plane? What a stiff.
If this was much ado about a vape pen you should print a retraction and an apology. Shame on the disgusting behavior for the flight attendants and the police officers, they should be suspended without pay for an extended period of time so that they understand the severity of their actions.
Was that you onboard, James? What makes you think it was just a vape?
I travel with my Marijuana often. I live in Los Angeles. I used to call LAX Airport Police and check their policies. I have flown all over the US and international Ounces of Buds. Vape cartridges. Pre rolled etc. I go right to the smoking area outside at LAX International Terminal and smoke all I want prior to my flight.
Well now that I know that this site is so staunchly anti-cannabis, I won’t be reading articles here anymore.
Grotesque smell? More like a grotesquely-closed mind from you, Klint.
If you don’t want to read my stories because you’re butt hurt over my hate of the SMELL of pot (not even pot itself), be my guest….
Article states its not known what happened to the passenger…..probably now on death row.
Certainly not.
Just gonna state the obvious… It’s illegal to smoke period on planes… Why this kid decided it was a good idea to even consider this is beyond even me… Anywho, ngl, this is why people are so against pot being legal… Morons like this special little snowflake who decided he couldn’t wait the length of his flight to get his toke on.
