Welcome to my next trip report, a multi-part series recapping my trip to Germany and Italy last week.
This one won’t be road trip-style like my earlier Italy trip report. Instead, I’ll focus on the flights and a couple new hotels I stayed in. This trip included eight flights: two on United, six on Lufthansa. I won’t review the domestic United flights but will review the six on Lufthansa, which include a mix of longhaul, intra-Europe, and domestic German flights.
My trip included a visit to a city in Italy, Turin, which I’ve never been to in the past. While not my favorite city in Italy, I found it to be charming. We stayed at the NH Piazza Carlina, a NH Collection hotel. I liked it a lot. Since there are few chain hotels in Florence (the Hilton was not conveniently located and the Four Season was simply not justifiable on a business trip), I stayed at a hotel called the Hotel River…right along the river. It turned out to be a very nice boutique hotel.
Here’s what to except in terms of reviews for this trip report:
- Lufthansa A380 First Class Houston to Frankfurt
- Lufthansa A320 Business Class Frankfurt to Milan
- NH Piazza Carlina, Turin
- Hotel River, Florence
- Lufthansa Business Lounge – Milan (MXP)
- Lufthansa CityLine ERJ-195 Business Class Milan to Frankfurt
- Hyatt Regency Mainz Suite
- Lufthansa A321 Business Class Frankfurt to Munich (and back to Frankfurt)
- Lufthansa First Class Lounge Munich (the “old” one)
- Irr-Ops on Lufthansa
- Lufthansa 747-8 Business Class Frankfurt to Los Angeles
The outbound flights (LAX-DEN-IAH-FRA-MXP) were booked with 70K Aeroplan miles and taxes/fees of $486. The inbound flights (MXP-FRA-MUC-FRA-LAX) were booked with 70K United miles and $129 in taxes/fees. I had originally booked MXP-FRA-MUC-LAX as the return but misconnected in Munich, hence the extra leg.
Stay tuned!
Matthew, looking forward to your reviews. Thanks for taking the time to do all this.
I thought United Europe to USA was 110k miles?
Return was in business class.
