Mykonos and Santorini Were More Beautiful Than I Imagined

Matthew Klint Posted onApril 26, 2017April 26, 2017 7 Comments

Although my stay was brief, I enjoyed my time in Mykonos and Santorini more than I imagined. Both islands are beautiful and worth a return visit.

I wrote about my hotel dilemma here and it turned out to be a non-issue. We stayed at a little inn for $40/night that was perfect…other than the loud couple. I’ll put up a brief separate review but the hotel was called Mykonos Beach Hotel. The price apparently rises astronomically during the busy season, like everything else there.

I thought our return home was on April 07th rather than April 5th…turns out we had two fewer nights than I planned so our visit was extremely short. No time to go Delos, which I was particularly bummed about. We began our trip in Mykonos and then took a ferry to Santorini.

In Mykonos we ate dinner at a very local restaurant and while good, our best meal of the trip was the following afternoon in Santorini. Locally-caught fish…wow. Food is good in most places.

Despite the shoulder season, the islands were already crowded. I can only imagine how horribly crowded it becomes during the summer months. Most businesses were already open again in early April.

In Santorini my wife wanted to do Oia to Fira hike, but we got started too late in the day and it was already too warm to do it. Next time we will do it, but start before sunrise.

Will we be returning this summer? Absolutely not. I’ll only travel during shoulder season. But I do look forward to returning. Enjoy the pictures below.

Looks beautiful. Did you slightly prefer one over the other in terms of just beauty?

I thought Santorini was more beautiful, but both were great.

Too bad you missed Delos. As far as crowds during summer, we visited in late June aboard a cruise ship. The crowds weren’t that bad, really (and I HATE crowds). No lines, we ran into few people walking through the streets, and no wait for coffee at the shop we visited. This was in 2015, so the impending “Grexit” crisis may have contributed.

    I’m confused is this a 2013 review or 2017?
