The Plaza Premium Lounge at Rome Fiumicino International Airport offers Priority Pass customers and select business class passengers the best coffee in Rome.

Location

In Terminal 1 for Schengen area flights, a string of lounges are available to travelers up the escalators on the A61-83 end of the Terminal. This area is after security and departure immigration.

Access

Priority Pass members and Priority Pass Select (offered by most premium credit cards) are permitted access to the lounge. We were told some premium and business class passengers were also permitted entry but they didn’t have a sign-up at the time and there’s nothing online that states which airlines offer access.

Passengers who wish to purchase access to the lounge can do so if space permits for €39/person; infants are permitted free of charge.

Seating

Seating is sectioned between five different areas, four standard sections (two near food and two near bars) and the fifth behind reception roped off for VIPs but what qualified travelers sitting in those areas remained unclear.

There were some tables down the center but as crowded as the lounge was, especially during breakfast, tables were at a premium. While the lounge offers changing tables and welcomes children, there wasn’t adequate space for a children’s room.

Food

Not all Rome airport lounges are created equally, Plaza Premium provided more food options than expected as well as a coffee machine (for those who didn’t want to wait) and something I haven’t often seen in Europe, a fountain soda machine. It was Pepsi so while innately inferior, it remained a welcome addition.

Iced juices, filtered water, and cucumber and lemon water were also available.

A mixture of hot food items was also a welcome surprise. While the waffles were not great, the seasoned potatoes and crispy bacon were excellent.

Bar/Coffee

The bar was staffed by two highly competent baristas who I suspect also pour excellent cocktails. I ordered a shakerato, an iced espresso drink and it was – by far – the best I had not only in Rome during my stay but perhaps ever. I would normally order an espresso in Italy but they were clearly putting out great coffee and I thought I would test their skills. I wasn’t disappointed.

There are many lounge options at Rome Leonardo-Davinci Fiumicino airport but the Plaza Premium was an excellent Priority Pass option for cardholders like me.

I’m currently standing in T1 and this lounge has a line at least 30 people deep to get in. Looking through the windows there are clearly no seats available. Sadly this is the state of summer travel now. When everyone is special, no one is special.

This is a great lounge, especially compared to the garbage PP lounges stateside. We used it a couple of weeks ago enroute to ZUR. Priority pass members were getting turned away due to crowding, but as we were flying SWISS J we were welcomed in.

And that’s probably the reason for the crowding – it looks like the Star Alliance lounge is closed for refurbishment.

Just as I was reading your high praise of this lounge’s Shakerato,Lady Gaga was singing ” Caught in a bad romance…Roma-ma.” This blog’s rules don’t allow me to repeat what my Italian friend Alberto expressed about your best in Rome assessment.
