After a lovely day with friends in Copenhagen, I flew to Prague in SAS Plus class and enjoyed a delicious Scandinavian breakfast served onboard…the sort of food I could only dream of on a 387-mile flight in the USA.
SAS Offers Healthy Scandinavian Breakfast Onboard
Copenhagen to Prague is only about an hour in the air, but flight attendants wasted no time distributing breakfast after takeoff. SAS doesn’t (yet) offer business class on intra-Europe flights, but offers a premium economy (“Plus”) product that includes a meal.
I love quality over quantity and the breakfast had excellent ingredients:
- Organic plain yogurt with granola
- Sliced ham and cheese with lettuce and tomatoes
- Warm bread
- Froosh mandarin orange + elderflower juice
You could taste the quality…it was nice things to eat, not just cheap, low-quality slop.
My only complaint was all the waste…SAS will hopefully go back to serving meals on ceramic dishes and drinks it glasses as it formally restores business class on intra-Europe flights.
I know the tradeoff…in the USA we get a bigger seat in business class, in Europe, you get an economy seat with a blocked middle (or in SAS Plus, not even a guaranteed blocked middle) plus a meal. But imagine if United or American stepped up their games and started offering little boxed meals like this even on shorter flights.
People don’t buy airline tickets for the meal, but I know people like me would be able to more easily justify paying for first class (even if you dismiss this as mental gymnastics) if a solid meal (and good coffee) were part of the package, even on shorter flights.
That’s another post for another day, but I do think there’s an opening for a US carrier to differentiate itself (and I know that Alaska Airlines, to some extent, does this already).
In any case, well done SAS.

I actually just flew SAS in Plus from ARN to LHR today and loved the meal they gave us for lunch. It was a cold smoked chicken breast with greens, pickled onions, sun dried tomatoes, a garlic cream sauce and some pasta. I was remarking to my husband how I would love to eat this cold dish over some of the unhealthy slop they serve in domestic F back in the US.

SAS is known for a budget airlines.
That may be, but I quite like SAS.
