Scavenging for the New United Amenity Kits

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 15, 2014December 9, 2016 11 Comments

I flew from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt in United BusinessFirst yesterday and was pleased to receive one of the new special edition amenity kits. I was hoping for either the DC or LAX tins and received the DC one, which has a great shot of the U.S. Capitol and National Mall.

It seems that many passengers, however, were not as enamored by the new tins as I was because I managed to collect 10 of them in the rear business cabin alone! Yes, I’m the packrat who scavenged each seat on the way out for amenity kits that were left behind. Now I can add them to my 200 amenity kits gathering dust in a big box in my garage…

But hey, I’ve now got six of eight cities (I did not see any Denver or Los Angeles tins) and even have a few extras–so stay tuned for an upcoming giveaway.

That sounds promising. I have an IAD-NRT flight on Saturday albeit C is full so I’m in E+. Will keep a sharp eye out for discarded kits as I deplane! (Managed to scavenge a couple of F kits last year for the lens cleaning cloths and wooden combs.) Haven’t seen the new “pencil box” kits on eBay yet though expect an avalanche of them by the end of the month!

Really hoping for an LAX tin next week on LAX-LHR. I’m taking your tip and scavenging around once we land.

Why is D.C. the only one without an airport code? NYC used in favor of EWR, which makes sense. Why no WAS in place of IAD? or simply IAD?

I asked that question in my earlier post on this. I think IAD and DCA are pretty recognizable and can understand why UA would want to incorporate both, but it should have been WAS and not DC…

I got 2 tins but I’m not particularly impressed. I don’t think these will be much of a collectible.

I got LAX the other day and managed to scavenge a CLE one. No one really discarded any on my flight. I flew FRA-IAD the other week and got the old C kit. My seatmate flew FRA-IAD last Saturday and got the old C kit as well. Sounds like ex-Frankfurt isn’t loading the new kits. Hoping to scavenge some tonight on my flight back. 😛

Well, using WAS instead of DC would make the kit say “United WAS friendly” – as in it was, but it’s not anymore! UA doesn’t have enough of a footprint at DCA for them to use that (particularly since IAD is their hub). And IAD, for me at least, conjures images of people-movers, huge sprawling parking lots, and long highways, rather than the US Capitol. You only get that great view of the mall when approaching DCA, not IAD.

United supposedly now sells the tins “in response to great demand” to its employees for $15.99 a piece and for $117.00 for all eight respectively.

I think they make nice pencil cases for kids with crayons and stuff… So, when does your giveaway start? 🙂
