American Airlines Flight Attendant Who Kicked Off Blogger Has Quite A Facebook Profile…

Scott Shoup, the flight attendant who kicked off blogger JT Genter from an American Airlines flight from New York to London, has quite a colorful Facebook profile.

Facebook Profile Gives Us More Clues About American Airlines Flight Attendant Who Kicked Off Blogger

You can read what happened here, then read the flight attendant’s side of the story as well as Genter’s rebuttal here. Shoup is pictured above with Timothy Carie, the purser on Genter’s flight.

two men hugging in a kitchen

I was surprised that Shoup went on the record by using his own name in his rebuttal and he does not hide the fact that he is an AA flight attendant. I suspect it won’t be public very long, but his Facebook profile is quite revealing.

His top banner image reads: “If you don’t terrify people a little bit then what’s the point.”

a screenshot of a social media post

Another image talk about his patience, showing a tiny bag with the caption:

“This bag is so tiny. What can it hold?”

Me: “My patience for people”

a person holding a small plastic bag

Perhaps most alarming, Shoup posted an image saying, “My toxic trait is when I find out someone doesn’t like me, I try to make it worse.”

Now there’s de-escalation training in action!

Or this commentary on understaffing:

Or these:

Looking at the totality of his posts on Facebook, I could make some NSFW comments on his personal preferences, his grievances against his employer, and his solidarity with fellow flight attendants as long as they are nice to him.

He strikes me as a fairly typical “career” FA…senior enough to hold a line on plumb routes and quite confident that he is untouchable in his role.

He’s probably a barrel of laughs if you’re on his good side but if you fall on his bad side, you will suffer his wrath.

I wasn’t onboard and as much as I’d like Genter to release the audio, until he does we can only piece together the clues we have…and Shoup’s social media profile suggests someone who has little tolerance for those who annoy him.

That’s fine (and sometimes even refreshing) in terms of his personal time, but when he’s wearing the AA uniform and dealing with all sorts of people, you do have to wonder if this crosses a line…

Can we lock up the FA while we’re at it then? Given he has a picture of bullets in the shape of a heart and something something about non tolerance of fascism. But based on his actions and his posts, as are most who spout they’re anti-fascist, he’s the biggest fascist of all. So yes, alert the authorities on him as well while you’re at it.

This story is just so outrageous. Clearly the FA that instigated this should be fired, but so should all the crew who supported his actions, as well as the Captain of the aircraft who didn’t perform his duty and instead deferred to his crew because he didn’t want to get involved. All completely unacceptable.

Sorry, I still don’t get this. Should the AwardWallet EIC have been kicked off of a flight for something this stupid, even if he was partially in the wrong, by this or any other FA? No. But why is it in AwardWallet’s interest to keep fanning the fires of a flame war with American? Granted there is no love lost between AA and AW right now but presumably they should be focused on building bridges so that one day there will again be a relationship such that AW can track AA miles and, more importantly, credibly push AA credit cards. AA is now consolidating with Citi and will presumably be looking to push a lot of new, relaunched cards over the next 12-24 months. Almost every email I get from AW is trying to sell me a credit card. As someone who flies AA, I promise you I already believed that 100% of their staff is not operating at the highest levels of customer service. So other than some entertaining articles for a few days, what exactly is the corporate goal here?

Off he couldn’t find the owner of a bag, he asks a FA for assistance. • Emerlink Reply

Ok but isn’t just as juvenile and stalkerish to threaten bloggers that FAs will hunt them down?

That being said, I really don’t agree with Matthew’s conclusions, because it pretty much comes across as if he is just defending his friend that was involved in this incident, going so far to basically insinuate that because the FA posted things on FB (which are fairly innocuous and standard FA foder), we should conclude that he is a power trippin’ queen that if you get on his bad sad you will face his wrath.

I mean the reality of the situation is that Matthew wasn’t there and is relying on forming a conclusion from the account given by his friend and the FA’s FB page. He kind of lost all creditability when he stated “I could make some NSFW comments on his personal preferences, his grievances against his employer, and his solidarity with fellow flight attendants as long as they are nice to him.” Self-righteous much? Why would a blog be making NSFW comments regarding his “personal preferences.” Why do his personal preferences even matter in this situation if not directly tied to the incident? Why do you need to highlight “his grievances against his employer?” All of it basically comes across as It basically comes across as nothing more than “revenge porn” to drag the FA into the mud to defend his friend by highlighting his personal preferences/grievances against employer/etc. with the intent of giving a reason for AA to fire him.

So who really is the bully here? Cause I’m pretty sure posting a direct link to the FA’s page isn’t going to help your friends situation, and I’m sure AA corporate could challenge you on crew privacy amongst other things.
Pretty classless regardless of who’s at fault in this incident. Stick to lamenting about how hard you had it when UA threw you off for just taking photos, posting/rehashing other bloggers postings, or 10 different posts about the same thing but stretching it into multiple posts for clicks.

I don’t have anything against Matt posting images from the Facebook profile as a so-called violation of privacy. Once it’s posted on social media, it’s “public”. That said, posting the actual link can result in brigading and I’d recommend against it.

Matt says that it’s his opinion to trust his friend and YMMMV. You can either dismiss it or not. He’s transparent about his bias. It does say a lot though when someone in a public facing position with authority, which an FA has, posts such stuff on his social media account and then is involved in an incident throwing people off of aircraft.

Not a big mystery going on here. Backed by his union, this punk terrorizes his co-workers, bosses, passengers and, in the case, the captain. Like most bullies, he does it because he can and he enjoys it and gets away with it. Challenging him is too much trouble. He brings misery to all around him. AA should fire this guy’s ass and dare him to sue. The airline’s justification is a slam dunk.

These people float to the top of the bowl purely on the basis seniority, then become that stubborn, unflushable turd that just won’t go away. They often have their little clique of like-minded seniors who are all hugs and kisses in Facebook photos, but can savagely turn on each other at the slightest provocation. Boy, these comments are really getting out of hand.
Usually, I’m completely against doxxing anyone but the FA did it to themselves, so… here we are.
I can’t get too angry with the cast of guest stars in the drama that is Shoup’s life (in his own mind giving off his main character energy like he does)
In the moment, all anyone wants to do is get rhe freaking plane off the ground on time. Given it was a necessary member of rhe staff throwing the massive sissy fit, the rest of them were left with no choice BUT to toss Genter off the flight. To do anything else would have caused more delay, or worse a cancelation of the flight lest the drama queen FA walk.
Shoup knows he holds all the cards at a time like this and works it like the (drama) queen he is, much to his advantage. Shoup went into this altercation knowing the outcome in advance and had no reason or motivation to de-escalate. It all went exactly the way he knew it would given the rest of rhe crew, pilot included, just wanted to get the plane off the ground.
Don’t be too rough on the rest of rhe crew and lay blame soundly in the lap of Shoup, where it belongs.

I was not there either and tend to like JT, yet think he was wrong. HOWEVER, I do not think I have ever thought less of you, Matthew. Using your platform to dox someone when you were not there is low. It’s extra low for a trained attorney, and a Christian. You wonder why people laugh at the alleged love we have as believers? Because of crap like this, sir. Whatever happened or did not happen is irrelevant, Counselor. You are out of line. I hope you do not unwittingly harm a man’s career by sticking up for a friend without knowing what happened. Oh, well, the UNION will have his back? Sure. Maybe. But who will have his back from your mean-spirited ugly-hearted post?

    Two things:
As people I would view online, I would lean toward JT as the type I would probably enjoy more–BASED ON PERCEPTION. That doesn’t excuse this.

As a career educator, my experience has been that my most insecure or my most funny students are the ones who will post things like the memes you cite. Perhaps you studied psychology too? Maybe you understand that sometimes people post things like that patience bag as an outlet.

Oh, make that three: I can think of several FAs and GAs (for AA in fact), and I don’t know Scott or anyone that knows him to my knowledge–who have been with AA for 30-35 years. Most of them are fantastic and not any sort of stereotype you enjoy perpetuating.

I don’t get you. I get wanting clicks. I get how multimedia works. You’re not a journalists but I get all that. I don’t get stopping sop low you would resort to doxxing then turn around and probably fly AA. I hope you have Scott as your next FA. And you know what? I hope you don’t even know it. Chances are he made it 35 years by being good at his job. We all have bad days, Matthew. Thank the good Lord above most of us don’t have them in front of you.

      • Emerlink Reply
        June 16, 2025 at 10:38 am

But you chose to bring awareness specifically to the FA and subsequently his FB page and go on a rant insinuating about his personal life, highlighting comments he made about his employer, etc. Is it public and out in the open? Sure, I’ll give you that, but you are using your platform to go on the defense of a friend (which you are entitled to do, the original post was fine) by insinuating that the FA surely is at fault because of xyz or even try and make a case as to the FA violating company policy as almost retaliation. Let your friend deal with it, cause if anything you are weaking the case. I’m not defending the actions of the FA, not implying that him posting pics in uniform or complaining about AA publicly is a bright idea, or even saying that he most likely wasn’t on a power trip. It just seems hypocritical that you’re pretty much doing the very thing that you condemned Elon Musk about when he “doxxed” the stalker that followed his plane. Sure the elonjet postings and information Elon posted about the individual was taken to another level, but you are using a situation (that you personally weren’t involved in) to drum up views/clicks, stating your personal opinions/judgement, and pointing people specifically to the FA’s FB page. So explain how that’s any better than Elon?

I don’t see it your way. I hope we can respectfully disagree.

His FB seems like the kind of crap I’d expect the teenage cashiers at the restaurant franchise I manage to post. Pretty pathetic for a mature adult with decades of professional experience in a customer-facing position. Clearly he doesn’t respect the work he does or the industry he works in. Exactly the kind of person I’d never promote.

This FA is the stereotypical bitter, b*tchy old queen that tries to make everyone else’s lives as miserable as their own

When your Power Trip goes to your head, sad but I’ve run across this type of FA and also gate agents often in many years of air travel. Many times, I’ve had flashbacks of the Soup Nazi TV scene.

After reviewing this Facebook page, I now fully believe that everything the blogger described truly happened. FA’s like this need to be terminated with extreme prejudice.

I have not flown AA in 15 years, since I witnessed a power hungry FA reduce a young female soldier to tears as she was trying to fit her duffel into the overhead of a regional jet. She had just finished training and tearfully said “I just want to go home to see my family,” but he would not let it go. The FA threatened to get her kicked off the flight, but the captain calmed her down. As a retired officer, I was incensed and swore I’d never fly AA again. These stories make me realize how right that decision has been. Every bad airline story seems to be either Spirit passengers or AA employees.

I always have to laugh when I see people getting upset over people’s social media posts being exposed. Social media – just like everything associated with the Internet – is essentially public, whether you like it or not. Don’t like it? Simple. Don’t be on social media! If you truly value your privacy, you won’t want to be on it anyway, and you’ll find you can get along in life quite well without it anyway. It’s a toxic, cancerous sludge pit designed to enrich a bunch of dimwit milennials & Gen Z-ers.

Now, as far as the FA, I appreciate Matthew giving everyone a rare window into the life of this senior AA FA. As I’ve experienced, AA is richly blessed with a plethora of senior FAs who act like good customer service is an option when they feel like it, rather than a mandatory, essential part of the job. It’s sadly comforting to get this kind of confirmation. The question is, what is AA going to do to rid itself of these toxic employees? Then again, I’m sure the greedy, feckless unions don’t help matters.

As an inflight service manager for a different airline I think that some flight attendants curate this abusive persona online as some sort of defense mechanism so that they can prove to their so called peers that they will not be bullied or taken advantage of by anyone. With all the rules and regulations that we have to ensure compliance on, some flight attendants see this as their personal punching bag looking for non compliance or worse picking a fight over a small issue. I can assure you most of us senior crew members are not like this and unfortunately bad press sells more press and creates a feeling that it is always like this. I sure wish live and let’s fly would publish more great orchide letter stories than as it does onion letters as the vast majority of flights flight attendants exhibit excellent service and caring. To be sure i think this flight attendants actions were reprehensible at best and his online persona shows him to be less than worthy of the wings so graciously accorded to him. I hope his management can deliver the right amount of sanctions so that he can reflect a little bit more on what it takes to be a brand ambassador and a good human being.

In some ways the captain is most to blame. He should have been the adult on board, taken control of the situation, and diffused the dispute. Instead he relegated an aspect of his authority to this testy FA. Sounds like he was spineless.
