Two Surprisingly Great Meals on Singapore Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onMay 10, 2017May 10, 2017 2 Comments

A reader asked about meals in Singapore Airlines economy class last week so I figured I would share my one and only experience flying Singapore behind the curtain for this week’s Meal of the Week.

First, a note on the trip. What a trip it was! I never wrote a full trip report and it is too late now, but I flew for almost three days without stopping…22,880 miles to be exact from LAX-HNL-MAJ-KWA-KSA-PNI-TKK-GUM-NRT/HND-SIN-RGN-BKK-LHR-JFK-PHL.

I enjoyed many meals on the trip, including a mix of economy class and business class, but if I had to pick a favorite, it was breakfast on Singapore Airlines in economy class from Tokyo Narita to Singapore Changi.

The 7hr flight took off just before midnight. I was expecting a large meal after takeoff and a snack prior to landing, but the opposite occurred. Shortly after takeoff, FAs offered a chicken wrap with choice of beverage. Singapore Airlines offers its signature Singapore Sling cocktails even in economy class, which was a tad too sweet but decent. The wrap was surprisingly good, with very fresh ingredients.

Singapore also uses “real” cutlery in economy class:

No menus were distributed, so I figured that would be it for meal service. But two hours prior to landing FAs served a hot breakfast. I chose a cheese omelet and was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it turned out. It was fluffy, nicely seasoned, and the side of cooked tomato, potatoes and bacon hit the spot. Breakfast was served with orange juice, coffee, a muffin, fresh fruit, and a bread roll.

If all Singapore flights have food like this one, at least you won’t have to worry about bringing your own food when flying in Singapore Airlines economy class.

Thank you again for sharing your experience.
I am curious… Do you think that the food quality is contingent upon the origination point of the flight? i.e., NRT perhaps offers better catering services?
Have found in several airlines that the food is consistently better in one direction more so than th reverse.
