Booked! Family Trip in SWISS First Class

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 1, 2017November 14, 2023 13 Comments

When SWISS First Class award space suddenly appeared yesterday, I knew I had to act fast. I figured it might be available for mere moments. Thankfully, I quickly found the prefect booking.

My wife is German and we both love Germany, so we try our best to divide holidays. Take Christmas, for example. Every year we rotate between Los Angeles and Germany and this year we will celebrate the Christmas in Germany.

I’ve already written about the trouble I had with Aeroplan on the way out…we and originally booked Turkish Airlines with an overnight in Istanbul, but frosty diplomatic relations have meant U.S. passport holders still cannot enter Turkey if traveling from the USA.

But up until yesterday, I had no return booked. My original plan was to spend two weeks in Israel and Jordan after Christmas (a great time of year to visit the Holy Land), but obligations in California for both my wife and me will call us back earlier. Furthermore, I’m not sure little Augustine would appreciate anything about it.

With the opening of SWISS First Class, Israel will now wait till at least spring.

We’re going to come back one day earlier than I wanted, but I figured that was a small price to pay for securing first class passage on SWISS on a non-stop flight with no fuel surcharge for only 70K miles each.

I suppose I could have booked Augustine his own seat, but even 70K miles is a lot for the little guy. He has still got 11 months to go as a “lap child” so we’ll see how this trip goes. On the one hand I hate to bring babies into first class. On the other hand, I want my family to be comfortable for the trip back.

Augustine still has never been “loud” on a plane. Perhaps this trip will be different…I’ll explore this further in a separate post…but I’m not going to book away from first class because my child might be loud. I’m hoping like his previous two trips to Europe, he’ll just sleep the entire journey.

CONCLUSION

Finding SWISS First Class award space is like finding a needle in a haystack. I cannot wait to try SWISS First again for the first time in six years.

Excellent! But what is Ben reporting about them pulling off the “mistake fare”?

Can’t wait for the follow up! I’m sure Augustine will do great!

I agree. In my experience, kids personalities don’t change drastically so if Augustine has been relaxed to date, barring illness prior or during a flight, you can expect past behavior going forward.

As long as they keep your tickets, this is an excellent purchase, and an amazing return flight back from holidays!

i dunno why Swiss thinks they’re allowed to unilaterally cancel (and I didn’t book any myself). There’s no published policy stating partners aren’t allowed to book them – that’s just an unwritten rule of thumb. Additionally, the full miles at the published award chart was debited, not some of the glitches like the 4 mile incident before.
