I watched the first episode of The Flight Attendant, a new(ish) series on HBO, and do not plan on watching any more. I don’t like blood and I don’t like murder mysteries…
The Flight Attendant On HBO: To Watch Or Not To Watch…
The comedy-drama stars Kaley Cuoco (from Bing Bang Theory) as a flight attendant flying for Imperial Atlantic, a reprisal, it felt like, of Pan Am. The airline has an Airbus A380 in its fleet, with Cuoco, whose character is named Cassandra “Cassie” Bowden, serving as a first class flight attendant (the plane scene in the opening episode appear to be filmed in British Airways’ old business class seat). Imperial Atlantic operates from Bangkok to New York via Seoul…
Bowden epitomizes all the bad cliches of a fight attendant. She’s an alcoholic and sleeps with pilots and passengers. She’s always running late and has a good amount of sass.
In the opening episode, she flirts with a passenger on the flight to Bangkok, they retire to the lavatory to get to know each other better, and at the end of the flight she is presented with his business card. He wants to hang out in Bangkok.
They do, have an alcohol-fueled evening, then she wakes up next to him in his hotel room the next morning, finding…his throat his slit. She attempts to clean up the room then leaves the scene, fearing she will be sent to a notorious Thai prison.
She makes it back to New York, but is met by investigators and interviewed over the death of the man (after trying to evade the interview). That’s where episode one ends.
So I guess my point was that I spent 45 minutes on a flight watching the first episode, I don’t like lying to the cops, I don’t like blood, I don’t like jails, and I’m wondering whether I should bother watching any more?
If you’ve watched the series (and even into series two), perhaps you can tell me whether it is worth my time, without spoiling the plot…
Considering how little time I have to read books for fun, if I do get a spare moment I should probably read instead. But sometimes watching a screen is just so much easier than trying to concentrate on a good book, right?
You sound like a lot of fun…. You do get that this isn’t real, right? If “I don’t like lying to the cops” is a prerequisite for a show for you, what do you even watch? And who bothers to write a review about something with that level of (absolutely stupid) level of bias going into it?
Please, dear god, do not let me ever get seated next to you at a dinner party. I guess we can talk about kittens.
I don’t like cats either.
Zing!
season one yeah worth it. season two no.
Our thoughts, too. And I mean who likes cats 😉
Book was better although not great, show was weird, did not follow the same story line as the book. Could not get myself to finish it.
Can’t believe they did a second season.
I thought the book was idiotic. If I recall the murder/death took place in Dubai, and the author did nothing whatsoever to develop the setting. I was expecting at least a hat tip to different cultural values, norms of policing, attitudes towards women-civil rights-whatever. Nada. I tried to watch the series but stopped halfway through the first episode because as a sober person, I have zero interest in stories based around casual (but actually not so casual) drinking.
All of this is probably why I’m a boring friend…
The pace of the show is far too manic to watch long term
If you are not into the first episode, I probably wouldn’t continue.
Show is more suspense and comedy and I found it incredibly entertaining. Her “job” sets up the first episode / mystery and at times helps move the plot along but its not about the job. Thinking of her as a “cliched character” misses the story point. Yeah she’s a flawed character with memory issues having to work through a mystery, stay alive and not get in trouble with the cops.
Hope that helps
I don’t like cheese, tomato sauce or dough. Should I have pizza for dinner?
S1E1 wasn’t bad, but it went downhill rapidly from there.
No, don’t bother. I found it sort of entertaining but the addiction element is very hard to watch especially if one has experience with themselves or family members/close friends that are addicts.
Lax-Mex biz? Doing a delta MQD run? 😀
The consensus was that season 1 was good, season 2, not so much. Mainly because it should have been a 1 seasons show or a limited series, but once the show makes some $$$, they need to keep it going even if there is no story left to be mined anymore (see Big Little Lies as an example).
OMG. The show is awesome. Very entertaining dark comedy, mystery, thriller. Rosie Perez plays a great character too. I’m looking forward to Season 3.
We started watching it but gave up after a few episodes. I can’t remember why, unfortunately!
Nah, don’t bother. The lead character is straight out of the self-absorbed tik-tok generation: a mess who can’t get her act together and makes just about every wrong choice you could imagine. The supporting cast is wooden and underdeveloped.
