To Selfie or Not To Selfie?

Matthew Klint Posted onMarch 14, 2014December 9, 2016 5 Comments

An aborted takeoff at Philadelphia International Airport tonight led to an evacuation of 149 passengers and five crew members. One passengers elected to post a selfie on Twitter just moments after evacuating the US Airways A320 aircraft with a “so yup” quip. Was this in good taste?

At first impression, it appears extremely tawdry that anyone would post such a picture. Even setting aside the fact that no one was injured (at least based on initial reports), the aborted landing appears to have caused costly damage to the aircraft and resulted in a temporary shutdown of PHL airport, burdening thousands of travellers. Hardy seems like the time for a smug look on Twitter.

But I am going to cut “Skip” some slack. Her first Twitter post after the incident was “so my plane just crashed…” with a picture of the aircraft.

Looking at that picture, you would think the damage would be much worse than it actually was and she received many tweets asking if she was onboard. Thus, I view her second tweet (above) more as evidence that she was onboard and safe rather than simply a jejune ploy for attention.

What do you think? Are there any limits left in a world of 24/7 social media?

The second picture looks much worse without the context of the first picture. Unfortunately most people won’t report or see the first picture.

It’s probably not the best time to be posting that type of the content, but it’s not the end of the world and at least everybody on board is safe.

I don’t see any problem whatsoever. Don’t even understand why anyone would care what the twat tweeted.

Until you’re in that situation hard to judge. Many people tweeted pictures of them and the asiana plane after they crashed at sfo. This is the day of social media.

I try not to judge, since different people cope with a stressful situation such as this one in different ways, though said coping mechanism might come off as cold or crass to someone else. That’s one thing that always bugs me – something bad happens, and people who weren’t there then criticize the actions of someone who was, as the person didn’t “react the way they should have”. Note that this comment isn’t directed at you; just a general observation about society in general.
