A group of young ladies were having such a lively time on my Kenya Airways flight to Johannesburg that one must not have noticed that she was resting her elbow on my tray table, not her own. The thing is, I was seated one row BEHIND her.
Woman Rests Her Elbow On My Tray Table (And I Was Seated Behind Her)
There was a trio of girls from Mozambique seated in front of me on Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Johannesburg. I’m not sure if they started drinking before the flight (we were delayed, after all), but they certainly drank onboard. And then some…
During the first drink service they ordered hard liquor. Then they proceeded to use the flight attendant call button to order refills on a dangerously frequent basis. They were also extremely condescending toward the Kenyan flight crew.
And goodness were they loud. My friend and I joked that they drowned out the engine noise outside…they were having a great time, but laughing and yelling and eventually singing like they were in a nightclub on a Saturday night.
And throughout this time, they were not told to be quiet or cut off.
Then one of the ladies decided to get comfortable, I suppose, and wedge her elbow between two seats and onto my tray table…
I had to laugh…I’ve seen a lot over the years, but never anything like this.
Eventually, I tried to put my tray table up and gently brushed against her elbow…but she did not feel it. She just ignored it.
It did not take long, tough. She shook pulled that arm out to (you guessed it), hit the flight attendnat call button to order another drink.
The flight attendant looked incredulous at them, but brought them one more round. There woudl not be time for any more, since we landed an hour later.
But as did descend into Johannesburg Miss Elbow decided to lean her head back, making her hair flow back into the row behind her.
What a flight.
CONCLUSION
I’ve seen a lot of things over the years in the air, but never a passenger who decided to use the tray table behind them as an armrest.
No, I don’t plan on trying it. It did not look comfortable at all…
She’s lucky her weave didn’t get caught in between the seats.
Here’s an idea for the headline: Angry White Man Complains about Woman for EWB (Existing While Black)
LOL… I was wondering how long it would take for a comment like that to come up.
I guess I missed the part that said how angry he was at the ladies having such a good time.
If Salon, Vox , Rolling Stone or Buzzfeed (RIP) got a hold of the story
You’re joking, right?
Since when does Black culture include pushing your arm into the space of others? I’m all for calling out racism where it exists, but sometimes, Joe, it’s just crassness that’s being called out. This woman was crass.
Wow the racists are out for this one.
It’s all race, all the time for you, isn’t it Joe?
Lol these people replying with outrage to Joe must be first-time readers. I haven’t seen a comment from you in a while
Stop this. You make REAL racist cases get ignored because of your crying wolf where there’s none,
Joe – not sure what her color had to do with her being extremely inconsiderate. Maybe you should consider your unconscious biases. Regardless, sitting there and doing nothing about the behavior other than taking pictures and blogging about it reinforces it to her as acceptable. How about at least asking the FA to do something other than serve drinks (which I thought they hated to do)? People that drunk are a safety hazard.
“There woudl not be time for any more, since we landed an hour later”
An hour isn’t enough time to serve another drink? OK, American Airlines.
The hair thing is understandable, but the elbow was just plain inconsiderate.
It should be mentioned how dangerous (for anyone at any time) this was, particularly in this case considering her (apparent) intoxication. I could very easily imagine an ER patient with a broken arm or dislocated elbow saying to me “I was on an airplane with my seat reclined and it was very comfortable to wedge my arm between the seats but when I brought my seat upright I couldn’t get my arm out in time and the seat broke my arm” (and I didn’t feel it so much because I was stupid drunk).
Dumb n drunk. if you need alcohol to make you happy? You’re unhappy and in this case disrespectful. Life catches up with all of us. Make your Parents proud lol.
Re: Babblespeak “People that are drunk are a safety hazard.” to themselves AND others.
I missed the part where Matthew said she was black. Whatever her race, the article reminds me of something a college dean told a student: “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.”
