As United Airlines ramps up its hiring, a recent job fair in Houston–with thousands lining up for a potential job–showcases United’s plan to hire 15,000 new workers in 2023.
Job Openings Galore: United Airlines Will Hire 15,000 New Employees In 2023
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics released a surprisingly resilient job report this morning, noting 253,000 new jobs in April 2023. One contributor to that number is United Airlines, which has already hired 7,000 new employees this year and plans to more than double that number by the end of the year.
United shared the following graphics with Live and Let’s Fly, highlighting both the geographic locations and types of new jobs:
United also shared a couple of interesting statistics:
- In 2023, United has already received over 12,000 applications for the more than 4,000 open flight attendant roles
- United has hired over 120 external “digital technology professionals” from major tech companies, including 70% women and people of color
- On Wednesday, United hosted a career fair in Houston, with over 8,000 showing up and 3,500 interviews taking place (the picture above is from that event)
Last week, we covered United CEO Scott Kirby’s proclamation that United was now the biggest airline in the world. In order to sustain the operations required to run an airline with up to 700 new aircraft arriving in the next decade, United plans to add 50,000 new employees to its workforce by 2026, a workforce that was 93,000 members at the start of 2023.

United Airlines wants to hire 15,000 new workers in 2023 and is already almost halfway to that goal. While some indicators suggest a recession is looming, United plans no slowdown in its hiring.

United has hired 120 digital technology professionals with 70% of them women or people of color. Why is it being advertised that United is being discriminatory toward White men? Proportional representation has now become excessive representation and nothing for White men. No wonder the big airlines are in the toilet *no pun intended* in terms of passenger satisfaction.

Good point. But this begs the question… why aren’t there quotas for hiring men in FA roles since 80% are women? 🙂
I’m chuckling because the quota IT jobs nowadays typically go to H-1b Indians and white women are shunted aside. Welcome to equality… ladies!
That being said, I have a daughter but if I had a son, I’d encourage him to put on earrings, identify as a woman, and apply for all the female scholarships and job positions and also identify as Hispanic/Asian. Run for an LGBTQ officer role in university and corporate groups, and get certified as such. It would still be ok to date women, after all, since he could identify as a trans-woman-lesbian.

I wonder what the attrition rate is at UA, or for that matter DL, AA, B6, etc, etc.
PAX cussing gate agents; handling baggage in 95 degree heat; assigned crew base of NY while living in Alabama; and air head executives focused on their bonuses. I can see why airlines are heavily unionized. If not, the worker bees would only get the crumbs.
