United Airlines Bulks Up July 2021 Schedule With More Flights

In what will be United’s largest month since before the pandemic, United will operate 80% of its domestic schedule compared to July 2019 and will bolster its previously-announced international service.

United Re-Introduces More Flight Banks At Two Domestic Hubs

United will adjust its flights times at both Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD) to create more seamless connections. In Chicago, United will add two new flight banks, creating a total of nine flights banks throughout the day. In Washington Dulles, United will add a third flight bank.

Flight banks are clusters of flights that depart around the same time to minimize connection time for customers. Although flight banks increase delay potential, they also increase airline revenue by offering passengers shorter connections and flight durations that often command a higher fare.

Look for potential schedule changes as United tinkers with existing schedules.

United also promises new routes to:

  • Bozeman, MT (BZN)
  • Orange County, CA (SNA)
  • Raleigh, N.C (RDU)
  • Yellowstone/Cody, WY (COD)

The schedule will represent a 17% increase over June.

United One-Ups Delta On Dubrovnik, Adds Service To Athens, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Madrid

Referencing strong bookings, United will move up its Newark (EWR) – Dubrovnik (DBV) flight to July 1st. Previously, the new service was set to begin on July 8th. But after United announced the new route, Delta announced it would match United with service to Dubrovnik from New York Kennedy (JFK) starting on July 2nd. Now United will begin the new route one day before Delta.

In addition, United will:

  • Use a Boeing 777-200ER on its Newark – Athens (ATH) route (instead of a 787)
  • Add a second-daily Washington – Frankfurt (FRA) flight
  • Resume service from Newark to:
    • Barcelona (BCN)
    • Lisbon (LIS)
    • Madrid (MAD)

The resumption of service to Portugal and Spain is contingent upon those nations opening up their borders to vaccinated American tourists.

CONCLUSION

Within the USA, the summer of 2021 is going to look much more like the summer of 2019 than 2020. United will add over 400 daily flights and add more flight banks at Chicago and Washington. Internationally, United will increase service to Frankfurt, use a larger aircraft for Athens, move-up the start date of Dubrovnik, and return to Portugal and Germany.

Unfortunately, no news since the video leaked out with seatback screens and then was promptly removed.

I pushed UA and they are incredibly tight-lipped about this.

Wait is IAD going to have 3 daily FRA flights or is Lufthansa cutting their daily flight?

Are flights to Tokyo set to resume? As of now the schedule shows daily flights to NRT and HND from both LAX and SFO with the same aircraft used on those routes pre-covid. It also looks like DEN to NRT is set to resume daily on July 1. Is that accurate?

Unlikely. Schedule for July should be finalized next weekend.

“Add a second-daily Washington – Frankfurt (FRA) flight”

I know it’s just one flight, but I flew 988 today FRA-IAD and there were rows upon rows of empty seats. It looked like a ghost town in Y. J was about half full. I know Europe is opening its borders, but restrictions are such that the LH lounge does not allow any food or drink inside. If you want a simple drink of water, you have to go outside the lounge. So yeah you may get into some of these countries, good luck doing things once you get there.
