Use Your United Miles To Be A Movie Extra In London

Have you ever wanted to be an extra in a blockbuster movie? Now you can…with your United miles.

Via MileagePlus Exclusives, you can bid miles to become an extra on Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, opening in theaters in July 2019. The winner of the auction will fly to London, along with a guest, where they will spend four nights exploring the city and spend one day as extra for the movie. No experience is required.

Here are the details of the auction:

  • Roundtrip United Economy® airfare for two to London Heathrow Airport
  • Two-night accommodations for two at the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane
    • Check-in: Sunday, July 1, 2018
    • Check-out: Tuesday, July 3, 2018
  • Two-night accommodations for two in Radisson Blu London Stansted Airport
    • Check-in: Tuesday, July 3, 2018
    • Check-out: Thursday, July 5, 2018
  • Access for two to be extras during filming of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2
  • $200 UBER gift card allowance

This auction is open to MileagePlus members from around the world, so even if you are in Australia or Asia, you can bid on this and will fly via the USA to London on United.

More details here.

Currently bidding is up to 181,000 miles. The auction ends on June 25, 2018 at noon CT.

Is It Worth It?

Airfare varies based upon location, but let’s call it $1200. The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane typically runs about $400/night, the Radisson Blu London Stansted Airport $150/night. Throw in the $200 Uber credit and we have a package value of about $3700 plus the subjective value of being an extra (often a paid position). I value United points at 1.5 cents. so 181K (sure to go up) is worth $2715. Put another way, I would not bid more than 250,000 miles for this package.

CONCLUSION

I’ve been a movie extra before. That’s almost a rite of passage for living in LA. Sometimes it is boring, sometimes it is fun. In any case, another interesting auction from United.

Another way of looking at it — the tickets are 50k r/t each or 100k (assume saver space), so at the current price the 4 nights hotel plus Uber credit and set visit is 81k. Not bad.

Terrible value. Extras should be paid and two days staying in stansted is completely pointless.
