The Two Most Popular Meals On United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 29, 2019November 14, 2023 14 Comments

For all the talk about healthy options and vegetarian dishes, United passengers love their comfort food.

During his presentation at Flight Plan 2020 last Friday, Toby Enqvist, United’s Chief Customer Officer, talked about new plant-based options, expanded choices, and the ability to pre-order meals coming to United domestic first class in 2020.

But he also shared the two most popular dishes on United in terms of passenger requests:

  • Hamburger
  • Buffalo mac and cheese

Two American staples. Two artery-clogging, fat-inducing, utterly delicious dishes.

As a frequent United traveler, I can vouch for that data…both dishes are personal favorites. Admittedly, I often opt for a salad over the buffalo mac and cheese simply due to health concerns (not taste), but I never pass up the hamburger when on the menu.

Here’s the buffalo mac and cheese, served with sliced chicken breast:

And the hamburger, served on a pretzel roll with cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce on the side:

CONCLUSION

That’s always a balance between comfort food and healthy food, but I think the top two United meals demonstrate how important it is to keep some simple favorites on the menu.

Either my perspective is way off, or that Mac n cheese portion looks so small it wouldn’t really have a big impact on your long term health.

My personal favorite was the pork chop, but I haven’t seen it on the menu for a while. I hope it hasn’t gone the way of the wine ‘flights’ .

I presume it’s buffalo mac and not lobster? Bc your other article says lobster. Mixing up UA and AA?

Correct, buffalo. I’ve updated the other article. Lobster Mac is my personal favorite.

The best meals would be : mezze with vegetable crudités. And a salad. Or vegetables with rice. Quite delicious and sustainable. I’m sure most people would prefer it to the ghastly looking burger with token lettuce leaf.

How did I know that you would not be impressed with the burger? 😉

UA’s food does at least taste better than it looks.

As opposed to say, AA, which is unpleasant in both look and taste.

Their vegetarian options are truly lackluster, yet they keep introducing meat options. Not a great idea if you are trying to be competitive in LAX and SFO markets!

United First hot meal for the whole 2019 has been Chicken, Chicken and Chicken, the Buffalo Mac & Cheese, Chicken Pad Thai or the Chicken with Cauliflower. All the Salads are also with Chicken !!
The reason the burger is popular is because I get tired of eating the same meal on every flight and can request this from economy.
Looking forward for some changes in 2020 !!

LAX and SFO from the 3rd highest per capital burger eating state in the Union. Keep up the Burger, UAL, it’s tasty, and you’re playing directly into the hands of your target demographic.
