United Airlines has discounted economy class awards to Asia and Pacific destinations by 20% in celebration of Labor Day.

You’ll see the sale already reflected on united.com, but note these guidelines:

  • Ticketing Period: August 30-September 7, 2018
  • Travel Period: August September 17, 2018 – April 30, 2019
  • No blackout dates, but space subject to saver availability
  • Discount applies to Economy cabin only
  • Transpacific flight must operated by United Airlines
  • Round-trip travel required (more on that below)

More derails here.

Notes

Two other notes. First, when United says “round-trip” travel they mean you must return to the same region you began in. Theoretically, if you just needed a one-way ticket you could book something like LAX-SYD for 32.5K miles and SFO-LAX for 10K miles. Since the one-way price is 40K miles, that only makes sense if you intend to use the second segment.

Second, note that if you purchased a saver award ticket already and find the price has now dropped, you can receive a refund for the difference. BUT (and a big but), a change fee will apply. Your change fee varies based upon your United MileagePlus status level.

CONCLUSION

While I do not like using my miles for economy class redemptions, this sale is attractive in that you can tack on Star Alliance flights to more exotic destinations like Burma, Laos, or Norfolk Island. Always check the dollar price of the ticket before using miles to ensure you are not better off just buying the ticket.
